POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 25, 2012) – The Vassar College men's fencing team brought home a championship in the Men's Epee Squad competition at the NEIFC Championship held at Walker Field House on Saturday. The Brewers finished 25-3 in bouts, ahead of powers MIT and Sacred Heart. A dozen teams convened at Walker for the competition.
In victory, the Brewers got a third and fourth place finish from seniors Nick Johnson and
Brian Rouse.
Vassar was competitive in the other weapons competition, finishing 5th in the Men's Foil Squad and 8th in the Men's Sabre Squad. As a team in the three weapons competition, the Brewers finished 5th. Sacred Heart, Brandeis and MIT rounded out the top three finishers.
There will be little rest for the Brewers as the team travels to New York University on Sunday for the U.S. Fencing Collegiate Squad Championships.
The Brewers were strong in the A, B and C Epee flights. Johnson advanced to the finals with a 5th place 7-3 mark in the A flight, sophomore
Tavish Pegram went a perfect 10-0 first place finish out of the B flight and senior
Brian Rouse was 8-0 and led out of the C flight.
In the foil, sophomore
Alex Bue went went 6-4 (fifth) in the A flight, sophomore
Giovanni Zaccheo was 6-4 (fifth) in the B and junior
Alex Vastola 6-3 (fourth) in the C.
The sabre competition saw sophomore
Matt Steinschneider go 3-7 (eighth) in the A flight, sophomore
Kenny Lee 207 (eighth) in the B and fellow sophomore Gabe Perez 2-5 (eighth) in the C.
