Perfect In Every Way: Men's Fencing Wins Third Annual Matt Lampell Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 18, 2012) – The champions of the 3rd Annual Matt Lampell Invitational are the Vassar College Brewers. A perfect 6-0 record on the afternoon brought home the title.

The Matt Lampell Invite is Vassar's chance to invite the teams in from the local area and provide them the opportunity to field full teams and compete NCAA style. It started as a scrimmage with Bard and RPI four years ago and has now grown to include New Paltz, Marist, Cornell, and SUNY Albany.

When Lampell was the Vassar head coach, he used to run a similar event that he called the River Rat. Matt and Muriel Lampell made an appearance and watched some of the event. Matt's 88th birthday was last week. He must have been pleased with the outcome:

Vassar 18   Marist 9
Our cross-town rivals gave us a run for our money in foil and epee this year. Steinschneider and Vastola were undefeated in foil for Vassar, but Marist did take 3 bouts. In epee they took 4. Vassar Sabre came through at 7-2 behind an undefeated Zach Wilson and kept things under firm control.

Vassar 21  RPI 6
RPI only had one foilist, but they had a strong epee squad as usual. Vassar still prevailed 5-4 behind a 3-0 performance from Maiocco. Sabre rolled along at 8-1 with Arden and Wilson leading the way.

Vassar 24  Bard 3
Vassar Sabre and Epee were both undefeated in this round. Foil dropped 3 bouts, but still prevailed 6-3.

Vassar 21 Albany 6
Albany has had a flourishing fencing club over the past three years, but Vassar was in firm command of this match. Sabre dominated at 8-1 and foil only dropped 2 to go 7-2. Epee finished things off at 6-3 with Maiocco again undefeated.

Vassar 25 New Paltz 2
New Paltz was lacking a foil squad, but they put up a bit of a fight in epee, taking two bouts. Vassar Sabre continued to dominate at 9-0 with wins by Arden, Lee, Coalson, and Gumpel-Jones.

Vassar 23 Cornell 4
Cornell's best squad was Epee, where they managed to take one bout each from Maiocco, Agarwal, and Nico Mongillo, but the Vassar squad still prevailed at 6-3. Foil was 8-1 and sabre again 9-0.

Next up for the Vassar Men is a home match in Walker Field House on Saturday, December 1, with Penn State, University of Pennsylvania, University of North Carolina, Harvard, and Princeton.
