BRIDGEPORT, CT (November 11, 2012) – Competing in the Sacred Heart Invitational was bound to have its ups and downs for the Vassar College men's fencing team. The Brewers went 2-3 on the day, with victories over West Point and Yashiva.
Outstanding performers on the day were junior
John Arden in Sabre at 13-2 (his only 2 losses on the day were to Sacred Heart) and senior captain
Tavish Pegram at 11-4. Freshman Zach Wilson was also excellent at 9-4 in sabre, junior Matthew Steinschneider was 9-6 in foil, and Sophomore
Roberto Maiocco was 8-7 in epee.
Vassar 25 Yeshiva 2
Foil was perfect against the Maccabees with Steinshneider, sophomore
Tre Artis, and senior captain
Alex Vastola all undefeated in the round. Sabre and epee dropped one bout each. Freshman
Elam Coalson got his first NCAA sabre win.
SHU 21 Vassar 6
Quite a difference from the first round, SHU has a strong and deep team this year and should be a lock to repeat as North East Conference Champions this Spring.
Matt Steinschneider and Trequan Artis had one hard-fought foil victory each. Pegram and Maiocco managed the same in epee, and Wilson and Arden in sabre.
Haverford 15 Vassar 12
Haverford's foil squad has been really good for the past few years and this year is no exception. Only Steinshneider was able to break through for one victory. Vassar epee won its squad battle 5-4 with Pegram and Maiocco earning two victories each and junior Nicolas Mongillo chiming in for one. Vassar Sabre rolled with a 6-3 squad totalwith Arden undefeated, junior
Kenny Lee winning 2, and Wilson adding one more.
Stevens 16 Vassar 11
Stevens foil squad was strong last year and has improved this year as has its epee squad under new head coach and former US National Champion Jim Carpenter. Steinschneider again had the only foil victory. Pegram managed 2 epee wins and Mongillo one. Vassar sabre had another great round at 7-2 with Wilson and Arden undefeated and Lee adding one, but it was not enough to turn the tide.
Vassar 18 West Point 9
We always look forward to our annual match with Army. Usually, it is a close match and is always interesting. The score doesn't always reflect how close it is. Foil was able to bounce back in this round and finish the day with a 7-2 win behind two wins each from Vastola and Artis and a 3-0 performance from Steinschneider. Epee was closer at 5-4 with Pegram at 3-0 and Maoicco strong at 2-1. Sabre again had a stron 6-3 round with Arden (3-0), Wilson (1-0) and Coalson (2-0) undefeated in the round.
Next up for the Brewers is the Hudson River Matt Lampell Invitational at Walker Field House this coming Saturday, November 17.
