POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 30, 2012) - Vassar hosted New York University and SUNY New Paltz in the Vassar Scramble where there was no team scoring but plenty of individual action on Sunday.
A total of 37 individual matches were played (25 singles and 12 doubles) between the three schools. The Brewer team members competed in 27 matches (18 singles and 9 doubles). Vassar posted a 16-2 record in all their singles matches and a 6-3 mark in doubles. Vassar posted an overall record of 22-5 in the event.
Vassar travels to Bard College on Wednesday, October 3 and then finishes the fall season with a trip to the NY State Championship on October 12-14 and ITA Small College Nationals in Mobile, AL on October 11-14.
Undeafeated players for the day in both singles and doubles included
Ava Sadeghi (4-0),
Samantha Schapiro (4-0),
Jennifer Ruther 3-0),
Lindsay Kantor (3-0) and
Anisha Kurien (4-0). In a second round singles matches, Kurien defeated Jazmine Colling from NYU while coming back from a 0-4 deficit in the 8 game pro-set to clinch the victory 9-8 (7-0 in the tiebreak).
Freshmen
Lauren Stauffer and Winifred Yeates were both undefeated in singles as was
Kelsey Van Noy in doubles. Sadeghi defeated the SUNY-New Paltz and NYU number one singles players and Schapiro defeated the NYU number one and number six players.
In doubles the pair of Sadeghi-Schapiro beat the New Paltz number one team and the NYU number two team. Last weekend at the ITA Championships, the pair defeated the NYU number one pair.
Team captain
Natalie Santiago reversed a first set loss against NYU's Rayma Pokala to win 2-6, 6-2, (10-4) in a second round singles match.
Hannah Van Demark finished the day with a second round doubles win with teammate Santiago posting a 8-3 win over a strong New Paltz pair.
