POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 28, 2012) -- The Vassar College women's swimming and diving team celebrated Senior Day with numerous season bests but came up short against a deep New York University team on Saturday at Kresge Pool.
“NYU is a strong opponent and it showed today,” said assistant coach Dan Decker. “We're 13 days removed from winter training and we're starting to see the positive effects in the way of season bests.”
The Brewers (2-4) next compete in the Sprint Invitational on Saturday, February 4, at Skidmore College. Vassar honored seniors
Amelia Couture,
Felicia Hansell,
Christie Musket, and
Caroline Shannon on the women's side and Max Bernard, Ian Madison, Jack Smart and Greg Sullivan on the men's side. The eight seniors sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” a capella.
“It was a highlight to see the seniors singing the national anthem after four years together,” said head coach
Lisl Prater-Lee. “They're multi-talented people and it's a strong reminder of what Vassar is about.”
NYU prevailed 211-88 but the Brewers posted several season-bests, starting with a one-two finish in the 200-yard freestyle as
Sydnie Alquist won the event in 2:03.08 and
Alison Burns was second in 2:04.29. Alquist completed a trifecta of wins with the 200-yard butterfly (1:02.69) and 200-yard IM (2:20.67).
Shannon Sara took second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:12.30.
In the 1-meter diving event,
Jane Cardona had a personal best of 211.27 for third place and Couture was fourth with a score of 2:07.74.
In the 100-yard freestyle,
Hayley Lemoine took third with a season-best time of 57.84.
