POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 22, 2012) -- It was a successful morning for the Vassar College women's fencing team. The Brewers earned two much needed victories over Cleveland State University and University of Detroit Mercy at Walker Field House prior to very difficult Northeast Conference matches next weekend at Boston College.
Next week, the Brewers (12-7) travel to Boston College to face BC, Brandeis, Tufts, MIT, Smith, and Brown in NFC Multimeet #1.
Outstanding performers on the day were
Brian Rouse and
Nicholas Johnson, who were undefeated in epee and
Alex Bue at 5-1 in foil.
Round 1 – Vassar 15, Cleveland State University 12
This was a close match. CSU has a strong and experienced sabre squad. Only
Matt Steinschneider was able to pull out a win against them. With sabre at 1-8, it was up the foil and epee to generate at least 13 wins between them. Each squad rose to the occasion going 7-2 with Bue, Johnson, and Rouse undefeated and
Giovanni Zaccheo,
Alex Vastola, and
Roberto Maiocco all just losing one.
Round 2 - Vassar 21, University of Detroit Mercy 6
Sabre can alive in this round with Steinshneider,
Kenny Lee, and
Gabriel Perez all undefeated in the round. Foil and Epee both held up their end, going 6-3. Epee fencer
Nico Mongillo was 2-1 in the round.
