Men's Tennis Sweeps Division I Fordham 9-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 6, 2011) -- The Vassar College men's tennis team blanked Division I Fordham University for the fifth year in a row with a 9-0 win on Wednesday at Walker Field House.

The No. 29 ITA nationally ranked Brewers (8-8) honor seniors Josh Jasso and Max Willner in the season's final home event this Saturday, April 9, at 1:00 p.m. against No. 9 Williams College. The Rams (4-13) next face Lafayette on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Vassar opened the match on fire and swept doubles outdoors at Josselyn Tennis Courts while losing a mere three total games. The sophomore duo of Kartik Kapoor and Dan Freeman put Vassar on the board with an 8-0 win over Kevin Maloney and Dan Kane West at No. 3 doubles. Jasso and junior Ben Guzick teamed up for an 8-1 win over Nick Kelly and Ken Fukumoto at No. 1 doubles. Senior Max Willner and sophomore Andrew Guzick completed the sweep with an 8-2 win over Alex DiRienzo and Eli Plangger at No. 2 doubles.

With impending rain, the match moved indoors to Walker Field House. The No. 7 ranked Andrew Guzick found his groove on the new surface and sprinted to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Maloney at No. 1 singles. Josh Jasso clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Plangger.

Vassar battled at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions to clinch the sweep. At No. 5, sophomore Josh Kessler outlasted Ken Fukumoto 2-6, 6-4, 7-64. Classmate Nick Jasso owned the net in a 6-3, 5-7, 10-5 win over Kane West at the No. 6 spot.
