POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 18, 2011) – It took the Vassar College men's lacrosse team three quarters to solve the goaltending acumen of Manhattanville's sophomore tender Dom Poletto, but once the Brewers ignited their offense, it resulted in nine straight goals, a career-tying six coming from junior
Christopher Toffoli and a runaway 10-3 victory on Monday evening at damp Weinberg Field.
The Brewers overcame a 3-1 deficit with 6:24 to play in the third quarter with a jaw-dropping offensive performance that resulted in four goals in a 1:43 span that started with a goal by freshman
Max Herman with 18 seconds to play in the third quarter and ended with a tally by junior
Jack Gross just 1:29 into the fourth quarter. Two of Toffoli's goals were scored 32 seconds apart, and were a decided knockout blow to a Manhattanville team that had held Vassar scoreless since 3:18 into the contest when the Brewers scored the game's first goal for a quick 1-0 lead.
Winners of three straight games, Vassar improves to 5-6 and returns to Liberty League play on Saturday, April 23 against Skidmore at 1:00 p.m. on Gordon Field. Vassar will honor its seven graduating seniors prior to the game. Manhattanville drops to 2-10 and hosts DeSales on Thursday, April 21 at 4:00 p.m.
While it was Vassar that controlled the offensive attack, outshooting the Valiants 29-11 through three quarters, it was Manhattanville that controlled the scoreboard with a 3-1 lead late into the third quarter. Although Vassar's Gross scored the game's first goal 3:18 into the first quarter, Manhattanville scored the next three goals, one to close out the second quarter by senior James Frommert and two third quarter goals from sophomore Billy Motherway.
With Poletto making key stops in goal – 10 saves in total – all the Brewers had to show for their offensive attack on goal was a single tally from Gross and two shots that hit the post and clanked away – one each from Herman and Gross. It was that duo, however, that helped Vassar storm back into the contest just as a steady rain began to fall. Vassar cut the Manhattanville lead to 3-2 when in transition, Gross found a fleeting Herman in flow for a momentum-building goal.
From that point, the Brewers scored at will, tacking on eight straight goals on eight straight shots, with the combination of Toffoli and Gross accounting for four of them, and Toffoli along with junior
Jeff Lee combining on a pair. Gross tacked on his second goal, and tenth of the game, with 1:03 left in the contest.
Vassar outshot Manhattanville 15-5 in the fourth quarter alone and 44-16 for the game. Gross had 12 shots, senior
Sam Seymour had 11 and Toffoli converted goals on each of his efficient six shots. Senior
Zach Beauchamp had 11 groundballs for a Vassar team that held a 34-24 advantage. Senior goalie
Alex Tice made nine saves, four in the fourth quarter.
