POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (Feb 12, 2011) -- Despite a fiercely contested second half, in which a determined Vassar College men's basketball team showed considerable fight in putting up 29 points, the Brewers dropped their final home game of the season to Skidmore, 60-46 on Saturday at the AFC.

The Brewers fall to 3-19 on the season (1-9 Liberty League) and will next play at RPI in a league contest on Tuesday, February 15 at 8:00 p.m. The Thoroughbreds improve to 14-9 on the season (8-4 Liberty League), and will return home to play a league contest against St. Lawrence on Friday, February 18 at 8 p.m.

After a slow start which saw both teams struggling to score, Vassar tied the game at 3-3 with a layup by freshman guard Sam Rappaport with 16:11 remaining for the game's only tie. Skidmore answered with a nearly 7-minute, 14-0 run to take control, and the Brewers never came any closer than 10 points throughout the rest of the game.

Skidmore managed to pull away on the strength of its shooting and defensive presence, scoring 25 points off turnovers to Vassar's 11. Skidmore shot 39.6 percent from the field for the game, while Vassar—constantly forced to take long jumpers due to Skidmore's strong presence in the paint— shot only 26.2 percent. Skidmore also got a big lift from its three-point attack, hitting eight treys against only two by Vassar.

Skidmore senior guard Jeff Altimar led all scorers with 25 points. Junior guard Terron Victoria posted two game highs with eight boards and five assists. Junior forward Kyle Clark added a game high four blocks.

For Vassar, sophomore guard Jon Herzog led Vassar in scoring and rebounding with 13 points and six boards. Sophomore forward John Donnelly added 13 points and five boards. Junior guard Caleb McGraw chipped in with 11 points.

Vassar honored its two graduating senior captains, guard Tyler Maland and center Chris Whitney, who left the game together with 18 seconds left to the grateful applause of the Brewer faithful.
