COLLEGE PARK, PA (December 6, 2011) -- The Vassar College men's fencing team tested its wares against the nation's elite programs at the Penn State Meet over the weekend. While the Brewers went 0-5 in the competition, the experience bodes well for the second half of the season.
The Brewers are 10-7 on the season. Vassar will be back in action next on January 22 with with a home match against Marist College, Cleveland State University and University of Detroit-Mercy at Walker Field House.
Outstanding fencer on the day was
Tavish Pegram, who finished the day with a record of 9-3.
Nicholas Johnson was next at 8-7.
Round 1 – BYE
Round 2 – Vassar 10 NYU 17
The bright spot against NYU was that men's epee beat NYU 7-2 with Pegram undefeated and Johnson and
Brian Rouse at 2-1 each.
John Arden and
Matt Steinschneider accounted for Vassar's three other wins in sabre. Foil was winless at 0-9.
Round 3 – Vassar 10 UNC 17
Vassar foil came alive in this round with
Alex Bue undefeated at 3-0 and
Giovanni Zaccheo 2-1 combining for a squad victory, Unfortunately, UNC got its revenge on Vassar for VC wins last year in epee and sabre. Epee was 4-5 and sabre 1-8.
Round 4 – Vassar 2 PSU 25
Host Penn State was a daunting challenge for Vassar. Foil and sabre were flat with no victories and only a few touches in each bout. Epee had a tough round with Pegram earning the only two bout wins in the round.
Round 5 – Vassar 6 Harvard 21
Epee did a bit better in this round with Pegram again winning two bouts and Rouse and Johnson getting one each,
Rafferty Pegram and Bue scored the other two Vassar wins in foil. Sabre again was flat.
Round 6 – Vassar 7 Princeton 20
The epee squad pulled of another squad win with Johnson finishing strong and 3-0 and rouse at 2-1.
John Arden snagged one win in sabre and
Alex Bue one in foil.
