NORTHHAMPTON, MA (November 5, 2011) -- At the Big One meet held at Smith College, the kickoff to the collegiate fencing season, three men's fencers came away with hardware. Senior
Nicholas Johnson and junior
Tavish Pegram medaled in the epee and sophomore
John Arden did the same in the sabre competition.
In epee competition, Johnson finished in 2nd place after a great day of fencing, which included a tough Championship bout against Joey Rafidi from MIT. Pegram also had a strong day, finishing 7th after a narrow 14-15 loss to Darthmouth freshman Adam Omar. Senior captain
Brian Rouse finished 19th in the tough field. Freshman Bobby Maiocco has a strong finish at 32nd. Sophomores
Tushar Agarwal and
Nico Mongillo both made the 2nd round and finished 56th and 63rd respectively.
In the sabre bouts, sophomore squad leader
John Arden finished in 6th place, losing a close bout 13-15 to semifinalist Peter Tyson from Brown. Sophomore
Matt Steinschneider finished at strong 31st in his first competition since switching from foil to sabre. Sophomores
Kenny Lee 39th and
Gabriel Perez 72nd rounded out the sabre field.
In foil, the hardest weapon to break through in every year, there was no change this time around. Sophomore
Giovanni Zaccheo finished highest at 22nd, followed by sophomore squad leader
Alex Bue at 24th, junior
Alex Vastola 27th and freshmen
Rafferty Pegram in 29th, and
Tre Artis at 35th.

The Brewers will head into two weeks of non-conference dual matches at home in Walker Field House on November 13 and November 20.
