CANTON, NY (September 25, 2010) -- The St. Lawrence University field hockey team remained unbeaten in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon, as the Saints used three second half goals to defeat Vassar at North Country Field, 4-1.

The Brewers fall to 2-6, 0-2 on the season and will host Rensselaer next Wednesday, September 29 at Weinberg Field at 4:00 p.m. St. Lawrence won both of its Liberty League contests this weekend to improve to 4-3, 2-0. St. Lawrence will be in action again on Friday, October 1 when its hosts Hamilton College in Liberty League action at 5:30 p.m.

St. Lawrence junior Taylor Vogt scored twice including the game-winning tally, while senior Kelsey Berry and sophomore Courtney Cartier added goals in the victory. Junior Emily Maier scored Vassar's lone goal.

The Saints opened the scoring at 22:05 in the first half when Cartier scored her first goal of the season, pushing a rebound across the goal line after Vassar goalkeeper Rachel Horwitz made an initial save on senior Brooke Maloney. However, the Brewers would respond just 4:24 later when Maier beat St. Lawrence netminder Nicole Matos at 26:29. Vassar scored off of a penalty corner when freshman Tina Caso set up Maier who lifted a shot into the cage to knot the score at 1-1.

St. Lawrence controlled the remaining chances in the first half, as the Saints finished with 12 shots to Vassar's five and held a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners. Horwitz was key for the Brewers, as she made four stops to keep the game tied 1-1 at halftime.

Despites Horwitz's best efforts in the second half, including eight saves and three defensive saves by Libby Feltch, the Saints used 15 penalty corners and a 12-9 shot advantage to wear down the Vassar defense en route to the 4-1 win. Vogt gave St. Lawrence the lead only 2:09 into the second half when she collected a rebound and snapped a shot into the cage for her fourth goal of the season and a 2-1 St. Lawrence lead.

The Saints would convert on one of their 15 second half corners to grab a 3-1 cushion at 43:40. Maloney got the play started, as she slid a pass to Berry inside the scoring circle and she sent a low blast that beat Horwitz inside the near post. Vogt would add an insurance goal off of another rebound try to cap the scoring at 4-1 at 64:25.

Though goalie Matos did not see much action in her end of the field, she did made a key save on Maier late in the game and finished with four stops to pick up her second career victory. Horwitz finished with 12 saves for Vassar. The Saints closed with a 25-11 advantage in penalty corners and a 24-14 edge in shots.
