SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (April 24, 2010) – Despite a career-high four goals from sophomore attack
Jack Gross, the Vassar College men's lacrosse didn't have enough offensive firepower to offset a four-goal output by both Skidmore's Rob Lutin and Corey Barkoff and the Brewers fell to the Thoroughbreds, 13-7, Saturday evening in Liberty League play.
The loss drops the Brewers to 4-9, 0-5. Vassar will conclude the 2010 season next Wednesday evening, April 28, with a 7:00 p.m. game at Union College. Skidmore improves to 7-5, 3-2 and travels to Clarkson for a 1:00 p.m. game on May 1.
Gross and sophomore attack
Christopher Toffoli, who tallied six goals in Vassar's previous game against SUNY Cobleskill, accounted for six of Vassar's seven goals. Toffoli augmented Gross' four goals with two of his own and senior attack
Nick Cardillo had one tally.
Skidmore broke out first, getting a goal from Mike Holden 36 seconds into the contest, but Gross' first goal of the game was able to even the score at 2-2.
From that point, however, the Thoroughbreds methodically built a 9-4 halftime lead and maintained a five goal lead for the majority of the game, extending it to 12-5 with 2:54 to play in the third period following a goal by Lutin.
The Skidmore attack was bolstered by 47 shots, compared to 23 for the Brewers. Skidmore placed 29 of those shots on goal. Junior goalie
Alex Tice turned in a strong performance with 16 saves in the game, his second best outing of the season.
Skidmore goalie Flip Bongaerts allowed six goals and made six saves in the game.
