Men's Fencing Falls to Solid Teams from Columbia and New York University

NEW YORK, NY (February, 4, 2010) – The Vassar College men's fencing team ran into two strong teams from New York City on Wednesday night and fell to both Columbia and New York University. There were bright spots for the Brewers, however, as captain John Rothman compiled a 5-1 mark in the sabre and the epee squad posted a 6-3 win over NYU.

Vassar will take a 12-10, 3-2 record into Saturday's final North East Conference competition against Sacred Heart, Dartmouth, University of New Hampshire, Boston University and the University of Massachusetts.

Round 1 – Columbia 19 - Vassar 8
All three Vassar squads found Columbia a formidable opponent. Epee lost 8-1 and foiled did little better in a 7-2 defeat. Rothman going went 3-0 in sabre and Jerry Dieudonne added another win in that weapon.

Round 2 – NYU 17 – Vassar 10
Foil and sabre only finished on the downside of 7-2 losses, but epee came alive with Zach Pattison-Gordon, Nick Johnson, and Dan Flynn all going 2-1 for a 6-3 squad victory.
