POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 2, 2010) – Two Morrisville State goals – both coming at the start and finish of the first half – proved too costly for the Vassar College field hockey team to overcome, resulting in a 6-3 loss against the Mustangs on Saturday afternoon in non-league play at Weinberg Field.
The Brewers, who rallied back from a 4-1 deficit with two second half goals to make the score 4-3 with 12 minutes remaining, drop to 2-8 on the season. Morrisville State, which fell to SUNY New Paltz 3-1 on Friday afternoon, improves to 4-6. Vassar will host New Paltz on Tuesday, October 5 at 4:30 p.m. Morrisville State next travels to Hartwick for a 7:00 p.m. game on October 6.
Vassar overcame a Morrisville goal just 2:34 into the contest by sophomore defender Jamie Anderson and one by freshman forward Amie Dolson with 40 seconds before intermission to rally back into the contest. The Mustangs led 3-1 at halftime and three minutes into the second half took a 4-1 lead off a goal by senior forward Lauren Bordonaro.
The Brewers, who were able to get just five shots off in the first half, exploded for 15 shots in the second half, and through tenacious play in transition from a strong midfield defense, closed within 4-3 following goals by sophomore midfielder
Rebecca Smith and junior forward
Emily Maier at 50:37 and 58:29 of the second half. Smith scored her unassisted goal following a flurry of activity in front of the Morrisville State cage, while Maier tallied hers off an assist from freshman midfielder
Tina Caso off a penalty corner. Caso had previously scored her first career game at 25:59 of the first half.
With momentum swung in Vassar's favor, Morrisville State was able to hold firm, however, getting two goals in the final minute of the game.

Maggie Brelis in goal, with Brelis making five saves in the contest after replacing Horwitz 15 minutes into the contest. Morrisville State sophomore goalie Kelsey Pellegrino made three saves.
The Brewers held a decided 19-9 advantage in penalty corners.
