Senior Anna Robinson assisted on Vassar's goal against Haverford

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 12, 2009) – After scoring the first goal of the game just over a minute into the game, the Vassar College women's soccer team failed to find the net again, as it dropped a 2-1 decision to Haverford College Saturday at Gordon Field.

The Brewers drop to 2-2 and will next play on Wednesday, September 16, as they host Stevens Institute of Technology at 4:30 p.m. at Gordon Field. Haverford improves to 3-0-1 and will return home to host Moravian College on Wednesday, September 16 at 4 p.m.

Vassar wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as sophomore Jordan Crook netted the first goal of the game less than two minutes into play. Senior Anna Robinson sparked the goal, as she easily raced past her defender up the right sideline and crossed the ball right to the foot of Crook, who swiftly kicked the ball into the right corner of the net.

While Vassar clearly was in control of the ball early in the half, the Fords got on board in the 14th minute when sophomore Anna Rayne's corner kick caused a scramble in the box. Sophomore Katie Van Aken gathered the ball and maneuvered past a Vassar defender to send a shot into the net past charging Vassar goalie Ali Higgins.

The Fords kept the momentum for the rest of the half and managed to score a second goal in the 31st minute of play as freshman Allie Chen fired a shot from 25 yards out just over the head of Higgins. Haverford outshot Vassar 11-7 in the first half and had five shots on goal, compared to just one for the Brewers.

The Brewers came out sharp to start the second half and it looked as though they would tie the game in the 49th minute as Robinson again used her speed to get past her defender and into the box but her shot was blocked by Haverford goalkeeper Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds. Vassar forward Rachel Shea gathered the rebound but was not able to get a shot off.

The Fords nearly struck again late in the second half when Van Aken went to cross the ball from the right side of the goal to a wide open Hannah Davis, but goalkeeper Lexi Hutton made a great rush and smothered the ball before the pass was completed.

The Brewers had another chance to tie the game with less than nine minutes to go, when freshman Keiko Kurita landed an indirect kick right in the heart of the box. Robinson again came up with the ball, but her shot narrowly missed the net and lightly bounced off the left post. Junior Carolyn Demougeot, who had earlier been on the defensive end of the field due to injuries, gathered the ball but could not get a shot off in all of the commotion.

In goal, freshman Hutton had two saves in the second half of play. Higgins had three saves for the Brewers and took the loss, falling to 1-1. For the Fords, junior goalie Herrick-Reynolds made two saves on the day and improves to 3-0-1. The Fords outshot the Brewers, 16-9, with seven shots on goal. Vassar managed just three shots on goal for the day.
