Poughkeepsie, NY – The #23 Vassar College Women's Soccer team won its fifth straight game to begin the 2025 season, the best start on record for the program, with a 3-1 home victory over the University of Mount Saint Vincent Saturday afternoon.
Alex Astalos (Tarzana, CA) scored her first career goal in the win while
Ava Holman (St. Louis, MO) and
Riley McGrath (Coronado, CA) each scored for the fourth time in five games.
Vassar starts the season 5-0 for the first time on record, while Mount Saint Vincent falls to 1-1 through just two contests. Saturday's win also gives Vassar three victories in four all-time meetings with the Dolphins.
How It Happened
- Vassar opened the scoring early on Saturday when Astalos found the back of the net for the first career time just under three minutes into the tilt.
- Sophomore Lucy Hart (Portland, ME) started the play by banging a shot off the right post and Astalos pounced on the rebound and deposited the opening goal just 2:50 into the contest.
- Vassar doubled its lead in the 19th minute when Holman finished off an assist from Rebecca Rodriguez (Santa Barbara, CA) at the 18:42 mark to give the Brewers a 2-0 lead.
- The Brewers spread their lead to 3-0 in the late stages of the first half when McGrath converted at penalty kick in the 43rd minute.
- Laura Shea (Swarthmore, PA) kept the Dolphins off the board with two first have saves for Vassar.
- The Brewers closed the opening 45 minutes with a 9-5 advantage in shots and doubled up Mount Saint Vincent in corner kicks, 4-2.
- Mount Saint Vincent scored the only goal in the second half, with Jazzlyn Cedillo finishing off a centering pass from Julianna Agueci at 75:57.
- Second half shots on Saturday were even at 4-4.
- Each team took a single corner kick after halftime.
