Holman’s Late Tally Sends Vassar Past #T-13 Scranton

First Year scores twice in victory

Poughkeepsie, NY – First Year Ava Holman (St. Louis, MO) scored twice, including the game winner with just over eight minutes left in the second half, to send Vassar past #T-13 Scranton by a score of 3-2 on Saturday at Gordon Field.
 
Saturday's victory improves Vassar to 3-0, the first 3-0 start for the Brewers since 2012, and gives Vassar three wins in its last four meetings with the Royals. Scranton slips to 2-1 through its first three contests of the season.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar got off to a quick start on Saturday, opening the scoring in the eighth minute.
  • First Year Sonya Franklin (Lancaster, PA) fed a ball into the box from the left wing that Riley McGrath (Coronado, CA) deposited at the 7:53 mark of the contest to give Vassar an early one goal advantage.
  • The Brewers doubled their advantage late in the first half when Holman tallied for the first time in the contest. Holman collected a rebound off a save and buried her first of the game at 34:21 to send the Brewers into the intermission with a 2-0 lead.
  • Vassar closed the first half with a 9-7 advantage in shots.
  • Scranton took two of the three corner kicks in the opening frame.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Shea (Swarthmore, PA) closed the opening 45 minutes with a pair of saves for the Brewers.
  • Trailing 2-0, Scranton stormed back to tie the score with a pair of tallies just over eight minutes apart.
  • Jenna Borelli got Scranton on the board at the 52:00 mark when she cashed in a rebound to cut the Royals' deficit in half.
  • At 60:16, Borelli and Morgan Griffin assisted on an Elyse Nicholas goal that evened the score.
  • With the game tied at 2-2, Holman pushed the Brewers in front for good at the 81:57 mark of the contest.
  • Rebecca Rodriguez (Santa Barabra, CA) headed a pass to Holman who scored under the bar late in the half to close out the scoring in the game.
  • Scranton would get off two shots attempting to tie the score in the final three minutes with Shea making a diving stop with 4:05 left to play to keep Vassar in the lead.
  • Scranton finished the second half with a 9-8 edge in shots while corner kicks after halftime were even at 3-3.
  • Shea closed the second half with four more saves for the Brewers.
 
For The Brewers
  • Holman recorded her first career multiple goal game, scored her first career game winning goal and moved into a tie for the team lead in markers with three on Saturday.
  • McGrath scored her third goal of the season to open the scoring and led the Brewers with six shots.
  • Franklin picked up her first career assist on the opening goal of the game.
  • Rodriguez moved into the team lead in assists with her second helper of the campaign.
  • Shea scored the win in goal with a season-high six saves for the Brewers.
 
For The Royals
  • Borelli recorded a three-point game and scored her second goal of the season.
  • Nicholas found the back of the net for the first time in 2025.
  • Griffin recorded her first point of the season with a helper on the Royals' second goal.
  • Mackenzie Van Arsdale suffered the loss in goal with seven stops for Scranton.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the game with slim advantages in overall shots, 17-16, and shots on goal, 10-8.
  • Corner kicks went to Scranton by a 5-4 margin.
 
What's Next
  • Vassar heads out on the road Wednesday evening when it travels to Western Connecticut.
