CLAREMONT, CA (March 14, 2009) – In a match that lasted just under four hours, the No. 24 Vassar College women's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer College. The Brewers (7-3) have one more match in their five-match tour of the Los Angeles area, facing Chapman University on Saturday morning.
"I'm proud of the way we fought in today's match,” said head coach Kathy Campell. “ As a team we competed well, but the the Pomona-Pitzer team played extremely consistent and offensive tennis."
At No. 1 singles, Vassar's
Nicole Pontee (Homewood, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor) played a tight match with last year's NCAA national singles champion, Sibohan Finnicane, who outlasted Pontee 6-4, 6-3. Both players played attacking, aggressive tennis. At No. 2 singles, freshman
Jennifer Beckerman (Santa Barbara, CA/Santa Barbara) also played a highly competitive match, rallying from a 1-4 deficit in the first set against Pomona senior, Becca Lange, but dropping a 6-4, 6-4 decision.
Freshman
Joy Backer (Del Mar, CA/Torrey Pines), at No. 3 singles, played extremely well against Pomona's Olivia Muesse, clinching the first set 6-4. The subsequent sets remained very competitive with Muesse continuing to raise her game to win the match, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.
"This was one of Joy's best matches this year," said Campbell.
In yet another close match, Vassar senior
Jamison Steele (Newport Beach, CA/Corona del Mar) lost a close first set 6-4 and rallied from a 0-3 margin in the second set eventually losing 6-3.
