Pomona Topples Women's Tennis, 6-3

POMONA, CA (March 12, 2008) -- In a match between two top ranked women's tennis teams, No. 8 Pomona and No. 24 Vassar, the Brewers were defeated, 6-3, Wednesday afternoon.

On Thursday, Vassar faces Chapman University at 2:00 pm (PST) on the Orange, CA campus. Chapman is ranked #16 nationally in Divison III.

Against Pomona, the match was Vassar's thrid 4 1/2 hour affair. The Brewers trailed 2-1 after doubles competition.

In doubles, Vassar's #2 pair, Pontee and Steele, played aggressive, attacking tennis poaching very well and hitting precise transition shots to attain great net position. Vassar posted an early 3-0, then 4-1 lead when the Pomona pair came back to 4-5. Vassar its their game to take a 7-4 lead and closed the match breaking serve at 7-6 for the 8-6 victory.

At #1 doubles the Pomona pair, currently the ITA National Doubles champion, defeated Vassar's duo 8-3. At #3 doubles, Vassar fought back from a 1-4 deficit to 4-5 but Pomona then took the match 8-5.

In doubles the Vassar #3 pair of Burks and Barnett dropped their first match of the spring season against Pomona and only their second of the year. Their record is 10-2 this year.

At #1 singles Pomona's Siobhan Finicane and Vassar's Nicole Pontee played top-level collegiate tennis with Finicane winning the match 6-3, 6-4. Finicane was an singles semifinalist at last year's NCAA Championship and is ranked #3 nationally and #1 in the West region in singles. Pontee is ranked #6 in the Northeast Region. Both players utilized attacking returns and aggressive all-court play.

At #4 singles Vassar's Krista Romita won the first set 7-6 (2), playing extremely tough in the tiebreak. Pomona took the second set 6-3 and since the overall team winner had been determined, a super tiebreak in lieu of a full third set was played (according to college tennis rules). Pomona prevailed in the breaker 10-6.

Vassar notched singles victories at the #5 and #6 positions. Alexis Jacobson and Courtney Burks won 6-4, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-1 respectively. Jacobson, who studied abroad in the fall, is undefeated this spring posting a 5-0 record without dropping a set. Burks is undefeated for the year with a remarkable 12-0 mark. Burks won the NY State Championship #6 singles flight in the fall and she and doubles partner Kelly Barnett won the #3 doubles flight.

In exhibition singles play, Jamie Steele won the first set quickly. The Pomona player came back strong in the second set tallying a 3-0, then 4-1 lead. Steele won the next five games to clinch the second set and the match. Dunn-Rankin executed consistent ground strokes to take command of her match. Anderson utilized accurate ground strokes to put the ball past her Pomona opponent who was coming to the net at every opportunity.
