Men's Fencing Down Hunter, Falls To Army

By Bruce Gillman
Head Coach

HIGHLAND, NY (January 21, 2008) -- The Vassar Men's Fencing Team looked good against Hunter in the West Point Invitational, but was flat against Army, losing the match by one bout.

Outstanding fencers on the day for the Vassar Men's Fencing Team were Dennis D'Urso (freshman, sabre 5-1 and Conor Kenney (freshman, foil 5-0).

Round 1 – BYE

Round 2 – Vassar 22 – Hunter 5

This match was a good one for all three Vassar squads. Epee went 6-3 behind a great 3-0 performance by captain Paul Brehm. Foil was 5-1 with Conor Kenney going 3-0 and Eric Lynch 2-0. Sabre had an especially good round going 8-1 with 3-0 performances by freshmen Cody Canning and Dennis D'Urso.

Round 3 – Vassar 13 – Army 14

Unfortunately the momentum didn't carry over into this match against Army. The USMA epee squad was quite a surprise to our Vassar squad. We were only able to get 2 wins against them, going 2-7. Their sabre squad was also challenging, including last season's MACFA individual sabre champion. Vassar sophomore Jared Berenholz was able to engineer an impressive win against him, but our other sabre fencers were unable to do so. Sabre went 4-5. That left it up to the foil squad to make up the difference. They would need to finish at 8-1. Despite great 3-0efforts by Jesse Bisignano and Conor Kenney, we came up one win short at 7-2.

The next match for the Vassar men's fencing team will be at Yale on Wednesday, January 23.
