POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (December 1, 2007) -- With four players in double figures, the Vassar College men's basketball team scored a season-high 93 points as it cruised to a 93-73 victory over New York City Tech on Saturday at the Athletics & Fitness Center.
With the win, the Brewers improve to 6-1, having won their last five games. Vassar travels to Southern Vermont tomorrow for its last game of the fall semester against Southern Vermont at 2:00 pm. The Yellow Jackets continue to search for their first victory, dropping to 0-6.
Vassar established its dominance early, going 5-for-5 from behind the arc in the first three and a half minutes. Thanks to the hot hands of
Brian Butterworth (Hamilton, MA/Hamilton-Wenham), who hit three three-pointers, and
Tyson Brazell (Salt Lake City, UT/Waterford School), who hit two, the Brewers established a 15-3 lead before four minutes ticked off the clock. A fast break slam-dunk by
Lawrence Avitabile (Southington, CT/Southington) off an assist from
Joe Davis (East Amherst, NY/St. Joseph's Institute) gave Vassar a 20-point 23-3 lead just six minutes into the game. The Yellow Jackets managed to play more or less even with Vassar for the remainder of the half, but the early deficit was too much to overcome. The Brewers shot a blistering 70% from behind the arc in the first half.
A jumper by Jamaal Hall (Benjamin Banneker/Brooklyn, NY) with 7:28 to play in the game cut the Brewer lead to 14, but it was as close as the Yellow Jackets would come. Butterworth complemented his game-opening three-pointer by scoring the final bucket of the game, another three-pointer which gave Vassar its final 20-point margin of victory.
Butterworth sank five three-pointers to lead the Brewers with 19 points. Avitabile added 16 points and 11 rebounds. It was his 30th double-double in 79 games, the 68th time he has scored in double figures and the 32nd time he has had double figures in rebounds. Davis contributed an efficient 16 points in 16 minutes. Brazell chipped in with 14 points while
Kyle Magnus (South Burlington, VT/Rice Memorial) added nine points and nine rebounds.
Hall (Benjamin Banneker/Brooklyn, NY) and Ryan Phillip (Nazareth/Brooklyn, NY) combined to score all but 17 of the Yellow Jackets' points, as Hall netted 30 points and Phillip added 26.
