POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 30, 2007) –- After leading by just one point at the half, the Vassar College women's basketball team rode 14 points, 12 rebounds and a career high 8 blocks from sophomore
Emily Haeuser (South Portland, ME/South Portland) to capture a 59-48 victory over Hunter College Friday night at the Athletics & Fitness Center.
The victory snaps a three-game skid for the Brewers (2-3), while Hunter drops to 0-4 on the season.
The Brewers started the second half on a 14-5 run on baskets by five different players, and opened up its first double-digit lead 38-28 with 11:52 to play. Hunter cut the lead to six, 39-33, after a three point shot by sophomore Shay Branch-El-Violet (Cambria Heights, NY/Canarsie), but would not get any closer for the rest of the game.
Vassar took its largest lead of the game, 57-38, after two free throws by senior
Chelsea Katzenberg (Middlesex, VT/U-32) with just over two minutes to go. Hunter fought until the very end, going on a 10-2 run in the last two minutes of the game to narrow the margin.
In the first half, Vassar pulled ahead 8-2 after two straight three point plays, one by Hauser on a lay-up and converted free throw and the other on a three point shot by
Ashley Sherman (Hewlett Harbor, NY/Lynbrook). Hunter answered with a 7-0 run of its own, taking the lead 9-8 after a jump shot by Mona McKenzie. This would be Hunter's only lead of the game.
After the game was tied at 15 with 6:50 left in the first half, Vassar again stretched the lead, pulling ahead 22-15 off of two straight jumpers by
Elise Okusami (Olney, MD/Georgetown Day). Hunter again put a run together to finish the first half down just one point, 24-23. Both teams were cold in the first half, with Vassar shooting 32% from the field compared to Hunter's 36 percent.
Sophomore
Emma Carmichael (Brattleboro, VT/Brattleboro Union) also put forth an impressive effort for Vassar, scoring 8 points and pulling down 12 rebounds (six offensive), which tied her previous high of 12 rebounds. Carmichael and Hauser helped the Brewers to dominate the points in the paint, 26-8.
The Brewers, who shot 36 percent from the field in the game, also saw double-digit scoring from freshman
Carolyn Crampton (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) and Okusami with 11 and 10 points respectively. Hunter shot just 29 percent from the field and 50 percent from the free-throw line. The Hawks were led by Branch-El-Violet, who had 19 points and 8 rebounds. Junior Heidi Hallenbeck (Manhattan, NY/NYC Laboratory School) also contributed 12 points in the losing effort.
