Men's Fencing Sweeps Field At VC Invitational

By Bruce Gillman
Head Coach

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 11, 2007) -- Vassar Men's Fencing Team hosted the VC Invitational at Walker Field House and ran the table, winning all four matches. Outstanding fencers on the day for the Vassar Men's Fencing Team were Alex Snow (junior. sabre 7-0), Conor Kenney (freshman, foil 6-1), Zach Pattison-Gordon (sophomore, epee 6-1), and Sam Stoeltje (sophomore, epee 6-1).

Round 1 – Vassar 18 - Rutgers 9

The Vassar epee squad went on an 8-1 run behind a great 3-0 performance by Captain Paul Brehm. Foil and Sabre were a bit closer at 5-4.

Round 2 – Vassar 22 – Marist 5

Vassar Sabre went 9-0 with 3-0 marks reached by freshmen Cody Canning, Dennis D'Urso, and Aaron Fagan. Foil was 8-1 and Epee 5-4.

Round 3 – BYE

Round 4 – Vassar 21 – Yeshiva 6

The Vassar foil squad went on an 8-1 run, a group effort with all 6 foilists earning at least one victoty. Epee finished 7-2 and sabre had a few close bouts, but reaches a 6-3 mark.

Round 5 – Vassar 17 – Sacred Heart 10

This was the scariest and most contentious match of the day. The Vassar Men beat Sacred Heart twice last year, but the 2nd time was only 14-13. Today's match started out with both the foil and epee squads starting the match out at 0-4. Only a perfect 9-0 performance by the sabre squad (Andrew Fischl, Alex Snow, and John Rothman), and a clutch run by both foil and epee winning 4 of the last 5 bouts for each squad allowed Vassar to prevail this time. We will see Sacred Heart again in January. It should be another exciting match.

The next match for the Vassar Men's Fencing Team will be at Princeton on Saturday, December 1 against Princeton, Harvard, Penn State, UNC, and NYU.
