Box Score Ithaca, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team battled Ithaca, the top-seed from the West Division, in the Liberty League Crossover Divisional Series on Friday afternoon as the Brewers fell in a 10-9 extra inning heartbreaker in game one before having game two suspended after five completed innings with Ithaca being ahead 3-1. The game is scheduled to resume at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
Game 1 - Ithaca 10 Vassar 9 (10 inn.)
How It Happened
- Ithaca struck first for two runs in the bottom half of the first inning on a RBI double from Camden Laney and a two-out RBI single from Collin Feeney.
- VC answered in the second inning to take a 4-2 lead with a RBI single from senior Ricardo Reyna, a bases loaded walk of senior Birch Herring-Jackson and a two-out two-RBI single from junior Jensen Bergman.
- In the fourth, the Bombers regained the lead at 7-4 on a two-run homer from Riley Brawdy, a passed ball that plated Ethan McDonough and a two-out two-RBI single from Connor Pederson.
- The Brewers scratched out a run in the sixth as Reyna, who drew a leadoff walk, came across to score on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 7-5.
- Vassar cut the lead down to a run at 7-6, on a RBI single from senior Marc Milano that scored Bergman, who drew a leadoff walk to open the frame.
- Ithaca added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on a RBI walk from Ethan Daddabbo and a RBI infield single from Ryan Laubscher to go ahead 9-6.
- VC rallied in the ninth as Bergman drew a leadoff walk, senior Taison Jemison reached on an infield single and senior Luke Barrientos' opposite field single scored Bergman to cut the deficit to 9-7.
- Milano drew a walk to load the bases and all three runners advanced with Jemison scoring on a wild pitch followed by pinch-hitter first year Kyle Donlon being hit by pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game at nine.
- Dan Kellachan entered with the bases loaded and no outs for Ithaca and induced a double play and a foul pop out to keep the game tied heading to the bottom of the ninth.
- Ithaca loaded the bases with one out in the ninth but junior Cade Terada-Herzer entered in relief and escaped the jam with back-to-back strikeouts to send it to extras.
- Bergman laced a one-out triple to the right center gap in the tenth inning but Kellachan kept the game tied at nine with a strikeout and a flyout.
- Daddabbo led off the bottom of the tenth with a homer to right field to walk it off for the Bombers.
For The Brewers
- Bergman finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI, two runs scored and two walks while Reyna added two hits, two walks, two runs scored, a RBI and three stolen bases.
- Barrientos tallied two hits, two runs scored and a run batted in while Jemison recorded two hits and a run scored.
- Sophomore Will Darrell started on the mound for the Brewers as he went four innings, allowing seven hits, seven runs (six earned), eight walks and struck out six.
- Sophomore Sage Roy-Burman threw 3.2 strong innings of relief, giving up no hits, two runs, four walks and struck out seven.
- Terada-Herzer took the tough luck loss after throwing one-plus innings in relief and allowed just one run and one hit while striking out two.
For The Bombers
- Laubscher finished with two hits and a RBI while Pederson and Brawdy each registered a hit and two runs batted in.
- Daddabbo recorded the walkoff homer and finished with two RBI while Laney, Feeney, Ethan Fantel and Scully each added a hit.
- Jack Picozzi took a no-decision as the starter for Ithaca as he threw 5.1 innings, giving up five hits, five runs (one earned), three walks and struck out nine.
- Kellachan earned the victory after throwing the final two innings and allowing just one hit and struck out one.
Game 2 - Ithaca 3 Vassar 1 (Suspended after Five Innings)
How It Happened
- The Bombers scored in the first inning for the second straight game as Andrew McDermott blasted a leadoff home run to right field to take a 1-0 lead.
- Ithaca extended the lead to 2-0 in the third following a RBI single from Daddabbo with one out but first year Zach Berner limited the damage after inducing a pop out and a strikeout to keep the deficit at two.
- Vassar cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth as senior Birch Herring-Jackson was hit by pitch and came around to score on a Bombers error.
- Ithaca pushed the lead back to two runs in the bottom half of the fifth on another RBI single from Daddabbo.
- The game was suspended following the completion of the fifth inning and is scheduled to resume at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
