Men's Basketball Pulls Away Late From Hobart for 85-74 Triumph

Brewers improve to 2-0 in conference action on the weekend

Box Score Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Men's Basketball team used a late offensive surge to pull away from Hobart on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers scored an 85-74 win over the Statesmen at home in Liberty League action. Vassar's record improves to 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play while Hobart drops to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in league action.

First Half
  • Vassar raced out to a 10-3 lead in the opening three minutes on four points each from junior Sebastian Medina and senior Nathan Denham along with a lay-in from sophomore Parker Neuenhaus.
  • Hobart drew within 14-12 at the 14:23 mark on a lay-in from Monty Nedd until the Brewers used five straight points from junior Shea Fitzgerald and another bucket from Neuenhaus to increase the lead to 22-12.
  • Fitzgerald's three-pointer with 8:40 remaining ballooned the lead to 35-21 and two free throws from Medina with 6:03 left put the Brewers ahead by a game-high 15 points.
  • Hobart closed the half on a 12-2 run as Gabriel Bergeron's three-pointer before the end of the half put the Statesmen within five heading into the break.
  • The Brewers finished the first half shooting 42.1-percent overall while going 5-for-11 from three and 4-for-6 from the free throw line.
  • Hobart ended the opening 20 minutes shooting 40.7-percent from the field, including 5-for-12 from three-point distance, and went 9-for-14 from the free throw line.
Second Half
  • The Statesmen took its first lead of the game at the 16:30 mark on back-to-back triples from Moesch and Justin Price at 45-44.
  • The two teams traded leads over the next four minutes as Allen Mordi's triple evened the game at 55 with 12:15 remaining.
  • Vassar went back ahead by six at the 10:47 mark following a bucket from first year Gyasi Zinn and a three-point play from Neuenhaus.
  • Nedd's lay-in with 7:26 remaining put the Statesmen within 69-65.
  • VC answered with a 12-0 run over the next four minutes behind five points from Denham, two points each from Fitzgerald and junior Avery Lee and a three-pointer from sophomore Will Gregory to take a 81-65 lead.
  • Hobart could only get within 11 in the final four minutes as the Brewers collected its second straight conference home victory.
  • The Brewers improved to 55.2-percent shooting in the second half and went 5-for-11 from three and 7-for-10 from the free throw line.
  • The Statesmen finished shooting 40-percent in the second 20 minutes while going 6-for-15 from three-point range and 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
For The Brewers
  • Fitzgerald scored a game-high 21 points and added five rebounds, four steals and three assists.
  • Neuenhaus garnered 17 points, seven boards and two blocks while Lee tallied 16 points, four assists and four rebounds.
  • Denham chipped in nine points and 10 rebounds along with Medina finishing with nine points, three boards and two assists.
  • Junior Kreekor Karageuzian posted five points, five steals, five assists and four rebounds.
For The Statesmen
  • Moesch led the Statesmen with 16 points, three steals and two assists while Nedd added 13 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Dorian Paki finished with 11 points and seven rebounds along with Mordi posting 13 points and six rebounds.
  • Harrison Muntner recorded five points, eight rebounds and two assists and Bergeron chipped in eight points.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the night shooting 47.8-percent from the field while connecting on 10-for-22 from three-point distance and went 11-for-16 from the free throw line.
  • Hobart closed the contest shooting 40.3-percent overall, including 11-for-27 from three, and shot 13-for-18 from the free throw line.
  • VC held a 22-17 advantage in points off turnovers and 38-22 in paint points.
  • Hobart garnered a 17-10 edge in second chance points.
