POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Department of Athletics & Physical Education at Vassar College is pleased to announce the hiring of Mike Doughty as the new Assistant Director of Athletic Communications. In his new role, Doughty will work with Director of Athletic Communications, Steven Merritt, in the promotion and coverage of all 29 of Vassar's varsity and varsity club programs.
"I'm thrilled to add Mike to the Athletic Communications Office and to the Vassar Athletics family as well," stated Merritt. "Mike brings an incredible amount of experience and expertise from his time at Mount Saint Mary, Mount Saint Vincent and Marist College that will be a tremendous benefit to all of our Brewers programs."
Doughty joins the Vassar staff after spending the past seven years as the Sports Information Director at Mount Saint Mary College. He was solely responsible for all of the promotion of Knights athletics as well as all recordkeeping, recording statistics, managing gameday staff and was the point of contact in the redesign of the Mount Saint Mary College athletics website.
"I'd like to thank Director of Athletics Michelle Walsh, Deputy Athletic Director of Athletics Kaitlin Leach and Director of Athletic Communications Steven Merritt for affording me the opportunity to join the team at Vassar. The opportunity to promote student-athletes, both on and off the field, at a world class institution is incredibly exciting", stated Doughty. "I'm also incredibly proud to join Steven's staff. He has been a fast riser in the field since starting at Mount Saint Mary and I look forward to following his lead in the promotion of our Brewer student-athletes."
Prior to his tenure in Newburgh, Doughty served as the Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Information at Skyline Conference rival Mount Saint Vincent for just over eight years. While at Mount Saint Vincent, Doughty played an instrumental role in building the Sports Information office. He started the department's archives and developed Record Books for six different sports that had previously not been maintained. In addition, Doughty outsourced the department's photography needs, building archives of action and head shots.
Along with the day-to-day work in the Sports Information office, Doughty was the main point of contact with Sidearm Sports as the Dolphins transitioned to an outside hosted website and oversaw the redesign with Sidearm that launched just after his departure. With the help of the Sidearm staff, Mount Saint Vincent was able to run live stats for Men's and Women's Soccer, Men's and Women's Volleyball and Men's and Women's Basketball.
In addition to his primary role as Sports Information Director, Doughty oversaw the department's event staff for home game coverage; training and staffing each event hosted by the department.
In the spring of 2015, Doughty served as the primary media contact for the Women's Basketball team at Mount Saint Vincent through its First Round game of its first ever NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament was the seventh worked by Doughty in his career in Sports Information.
Prior to his work in Riverdale, Doughty served as an Assistant Sports Information Director at Division I Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. While on staff with the Red Foxes, Doughty served as the primary media contact for nine sports, including the Men's Soccer, Softball and Women's Water Polo programs that advanced to their respective NCAA Tournaments during the 2005-06 academic year.
Doughty also served as the secondary media contact for the Women's Basketball team at Marist through its run to the Sweet 16 in 2007. He coordinated media availability for student-athletes and coaches during the First and Second Rounds hosted by Stanford and the Regional Semifinal Round in Dayton, Ohio.
Doughty served as a media assistant during the 2013 Bridgeport Regional of the Division I Women's Basketball Tournament, recording student-athlete and coaches' quotes during their press availability on the day prior to games and inputting official stats during the three games of the regional in Bridgeport, Conn.
A lifelong native of the Hudson Valley, Doughty graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Communications from Saint Joseph's College of Maine in 2003.
Doughty and his wife Erin, the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Marist, reside in LaGrange, N.Y. with their son Chase and daughter Fallon.
