Men's Lacrosse Wins Fourth Straight in Road Matchup With Emerson

Santise scores five times to lead Vassar

Box Score BOSTON, M.A. - Junior Troy Santise scored a game-high five goals for the Vassar College Men's Lacrosse team as the Brewers earned a hard-fought 17-16 road victory over Emerson on Wednesday evening. Vassar improves to 4-1 overall while the Lions fall to 3-3.

Vassar opened up the contest with a goal from junior Dan Negron at the 12:20 mark before the Lions drew even with a tally from Aedan Kiniry. The Brewers answered with three straight goals as junior Ian Zumpano found the back of the net twice and sophomore Shane O'Hara scored off a feed from Santise. Following a score from Jack O'Rourke to trim the lead to two, Santise scored off a sweet feed from senior Riley Olds for a man-up goal with 55 seconds left in the quarter to go ahead 5-2.

Goals by Birk Swan and Jack Burns for the Lions reduced the Vassar lead to one with 11:06 left in the second quarter before Santise and Zumpano each scored for the Brewers to push the lead back to three. Emerson once again trimmed the lead to one after back-to-back scores from Burns and Kurt Schwarz with 45 seconds left in the half as Vassar held a 8-7 lead at the break.

The Brewers scored the first two goals of the second half as Santise and Olds both found the back of the net with 13:13 to go in the quarter. Emerson came back with four straight tallies, including two by Benson Offit, as Offit's second goal during the run gave the Lions its first lead at 11-10 at the 2:42 mark. Freshman Cullen Fagan and Olds scored the next two goals of the game to regain the lead at 12-11 before the Lions' Nicholas Fulgione tied the contest with 10 seconds left in the quarter.

The two squads traded goals in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter as Santise fired one past the goalkeeper on an assist by freshman Anderson Eads to go ahead 16-14 with 6:13 remaining. Following another tally from O'Hara to give Vassar a three goal lead, Emerson scored two goals that were 10 seconds apart as James Toomy found the back of the net to get within one with 2:22 to go. Junior Solomon Hess' caused turnover with just under a minute to go clinched the Vassar 17-16 road victory.

Santise finished the day with five goals and an assist while O'Hara and Zumpano each potted three goals. Olds tallied two goals and an assists while Negron scored two goals. Sophomore Holden Anderson picked up a team-high 12 ground balls while Zumpano and Hess each added four ground balls. Hess and Fagan each recorded two caused turnovers. Sophomore Jack Bagin earned the win in goal for the Brewers as he made 10 saves.

Burns recorded four goals and an assist for the Lions while Kiniry scored three goals and Offit, Swan and Fulgione each tallied two goals. Toomy picked up a team-high eight ground balls along with Josh DeMattos adding six ground balls. DeMattos and Jiwon Kim each recorded two caused turnovers and Malcolm McGrath took the loss in net for Emerson while making 19 saves.

The Brewers will return to Weinberg Field on Saturday afternoon against Wheaton (Mass.) at 1:00 p.m.
