Men's Basketball Falls Short at #2 Williams

Johnson posts team-high 15 points in 68-56 loss

Box Score WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Three players reached double-figures as Williams College posted a 68-56 victory over Vassar College in non-league action on Monday evening. The Ephs, ranked second in the nation in the latest D3Hoops.com Poll, move to 12-0 on the season, while the Brewers are now 6-4 overall.

First half action saw the visiting Brewers open up a 7-2 advantage, but the homestanding Ephs battled back with a 7-0 run pushing Williams to a 9-7 lead at 15:15 to force a Vassar timeout. The Brewers responded out of the reset with senior captain Zach Johnson draining a layup, to tie it at 9-all.

Williams later held a 17-14 lead, but a layup from senior guard Jack Rothenberg, who added an ensuing free throw, saw the contest once again tied, 17-17 with 11:51 to play. A three pointer from senior guard Zev Katz pushed the Brewers into the advantage, but the Ephs once again battled back on a shot from Cole Prowitt-Smith to make it a one-point contest (20-19) at 10:34.

Vassar continued to lead as sophomore guard Alan Cedeno had a great steal, leading to a deep three from senior guard Kevin McAuliffe for a 26-22 lead with 6:56 remaining. Williams finally fended off the Vassar defense as Alex Lee connected on a three of his own to pull it to one (26-25) a minute later.

The Ephs quickly took control as a Brandon Arnold layup, followed by an Evan Glatzer bucket, pushed Williams ahead 31-16. Trailing by a 34-37 margin late, the Brewers saw McAuliffe head to the line, banking both free throws to send the teams into halftime with Williams up 34-29.

Out of the intermission, the Brewers battled back as Johnson drained a layup to bring the score back to within three (34-31). Despite that momentum, back-to-back three pointers from Prowitt-Smith saw the Ephs open a 48-40 score at the 13:09 mark.

Vassar rebounded once more, going on a 4-0 run at the mid-point behind inside layups from both Johnson and Adams, closing the gap to four (48-44) with 11:38 on the clock. The Brewers continued to take advantage at the free throw line as Johnson pulled it to within three (48-45) making one of two.

Willams jumped out on a 6-0 run of its own as buckets from Lee, Prowitt-Smith Karren made it a 54-45 lead with 9:42 to go. Senior guard Jack Rothenberg broke up the run, driving in for a nice layup, which was followed less than a minute later by another three from McAuliffe to pull the Brewers to within four (54-50) with 8:23 on the clock.

Despite the momentum, the Brewers could not solve a strong Williams offense as Brandon Arnold dropped in a layup, followed by another bucket from Hudson Hansen to open the margin back out to eight (58-50) with 6:50 on the clock.

Trailing by 10, senior captain Avni Mustafaj banked in a layup at 3:55, but the Ephs continued to take advantage of timely Vassar fouls as Prowitt-Smith connected on two shots at the line. Johnson quickly countered with back-to-back buckets to cut it to a 62-56 game with 2:09 to play.

Williams proved too strong down the stretch as the Ephs connected on a bucket in the final minute for the 68-56 victory.

Prowitt-Smith led all players in scoring, dropping in 16 points with three boards and an assist. Sean Spivy added 11 points with seven caroms, two assists and two steals, while Porter had 11 points with four rebounds. Karren led all players in the game with three blocks.

For the Brewers, Johnson recorded a season-high 15 points, leading all players with eight rebounds to go along with two assists and a steal. McAuliffe added 12 points with two boards, while Mustafaj had seven points, three assists and two steals with a rebound. Rothenberg also had seven points, adding six caroms as well.

The Brewers return to action on Friday when it heads to the North Country to resume Liberty League play. Vassar is at Clarkson on Friday evening at 7:30pm, traveling to St. Lawrence on Saturday for a 4pm game.
