TROY, NY – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners for the period ending September 18th and three Vassar College student-athletes were recognized in men's tennis. Sophomore
James Balon was named the Singles Performer of the Week, freshmen
Fernando Bauermeister and
Nolan Kubiak were tabbed the Doubles Team of the Week, while Kubiak was also honored as the Rookie of the Week.
Balon had an outstanding opening weekend for Vassar, posting a 3-0 record at the Haverford Fall Invitational. In the opener against the homestanding Fords, he recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win over Justin Minerva. That afternoon, he recorded a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Hamilton's Nicolas Gritz. Balon concluded action on Sunday with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Washington's Ryokei Kawai. He also went 3-0 in doubles action on the weekend, including a 2-0 mark with rookie
Miles Sondergaard Jensen.
Bauermeister and Kubiak also made a splash to open their collegiate careers, going 3-0 against the field at Haverford. Against the Fords, the duo posted an 8-5 win over Stefan Johnson and Justin Minerva. Later that day, the pair defeated Hamilton's Connor Griff and Coby Feldman by a hard-fought 8-7 (8-6) margin. On Sunday, the duo bested Washington's Shoremen's Ryokei Kawai and Andre Remi Jakobi, 8-6 to complete the undefeated weekend.
In addition to his outstanding doubles effort, Kubiak also went 2-0 in singles action in last weekend's season-opener. Facing Haverford's Daniel Loder, he notched a 6-1, 6-4 victory. He followed that up with an afternoon win against Hamilton's Eric Stein by a 6-4, 6-4 margin.
Vassar returns to action on September 30 when it travels to Madison, NJ for the ITA Regional Championships. Action runs from the 30th through October 2nd.
