Vassar Falls to St. John Fisher in UVC Play

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – In the first road game in almost a month, the No. 2 Vassar men's volleyball team dropped a 1-3 decision to St. John Fisher in UVC action on Friday evening. The Cardinals took the first two sets, 17-25 and 15-25, before the Brewers won 25-20 in the third. St. John Fisher then won the fourth in extra points at 25-27. With the loss, Vassar moves to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in the UVC. St. John Fisher rises to 13-4 and 3-1 in the conference.

The Cardinals used a 7-1 run in the first to take a 9-3 lead and continued to control before Andrew Kim, and Adam Gulick knocked it kills to cut the lead to 9-12. Vassar could never find its rhythm as St. John Fisher's Paul Hackford sent in a service ace to push it to 11-17. A St. John Fisher attack error and a Gavin van Beveren made it 17-23, but the Cardinals scored the final two.

It was another challenging set for the Brewers in the second. Kim converted a kill to make it 14-19, but St. John Fisher went on a 6-1 span to close out. Vassar picked up the win in the third after jumping out to a 6-1 lead. The Cardinals tied 7-7, but Billy Fan and then Andrew Kim sent in kills to take a two-point lead. Both sides traded leads after that with three ties until 16-16. Kills from Kim and van Beveren made it 19-16, and a run by the Cardinals put it at 21-20. The Brewers rolled to four consecutive points that were finished off by a Fan kill to give the set victory.

The fourth set was a tight contest, and Vassar took a 19-18 lead when Gulick knocked in a kill. St. John Fished scored the following three points, but the Brewers answered three straight. A Vassar error tied the set 22-22, Colin Jones and Kim scored the successive two kills. Another two Cardinals' points tied again, and the Kim gave Vassar a 25-24 advantage following a kill. St. John Fisher prevented the comeback, though, going on a 3-0 run to end the set.

Kim led the Brewers with 19 kills on 29 attacks (.552) and recorded a team-high 13 digs. Gulick added 15 kills and seven digs, while Matt Usui had ten digs.

Jake Baker tallied 18 kills for the Cardinals, while Josh Bigford added 12.

Vassar looks to bounce back tomorrow when they face Nazareth at 11 a.m. at St. John Fisher.
