Brewers Top Golden Flyers In Four Sets

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – After a tough loss the previous evening, the No. 2 Vassar men's volleyball team bounced back with a 3-1 victory over Nazareth on Saturday afternoon. Vassar took the first two sets 25-15 and 26-24 before falling 26-28 in the third. It was closed out in the fourth with the Brewers winning 25-15. The Brewers move to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in the UVC, while the Golden Flyers go to 17-5 and 1-2 in the conference.

After Colin Jones (San Diego, CA) sent in a kill to make it 8-5, Gavin van Beveren (Alpharetta, GA) followed with a kill, and a Nazareth error made it 10-5. Two aces by Jacob Kim (Pleasanton, CA) built the Brewers' lead to 13-7 as Vassar continued to control the set. The Golden Flyers chipped back to make it 24-15, but a Nazareth error gave Vassar the set point.

Jones made it 17-13 when he blocked an Owen Wickens attack in the second. A Nazareth run cut the Brewers' lead to 18-16, but an error and Jacob Kim kill put the Brewers ahead 21-16. Some Vassar errors allowed Nazareth back in, tied 23-23. Antonio Sargent gave the Golden Flyers their first lead, but a 3-0 run capped off by an Adam Gulick (Buffalo, NY) and Jones double block put the Brewers up 2-0.

Nazareth built some momentum in the third, taking an 11-12 lead when Trent Caviness knocked in a kill. Nine ties followed until it was 26-26. Wickens recorded the next kill, and then Josh Weaver gave Nazareth the set-winning kill.

In the fourth, Payne Lounsbery (Long Beach, CA) and van Beveren went one-two on kills to give Vassar a 13-7 advantage. A Lounsbery ace, two Jones' kills, and a Golden Flyers error put the Brewers up 22-11. Nazareth cut the deficit to nine, but van Beveren scored the final kill to give Vassar the win.

For the Brewers, van Beveren recorded a season-high 16 kills on a .789 hitting percentage. He also added five total blocks. Andre Kim (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) tacked on 12 kills, three aces, and three total blocks, while Lounsbery had eight kills.
