POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – After winning the first set, the Vassar men's volleyball dropped the next three as New Paltz took a 3-1 victory over the Brewers on Saturday evening. Vassar won 25-22 before falling 22-25, 21-25, and 16-25. With the loss, Vassar falls to 14-5 and 5-2 in the UVC, while New Paltz goes to 17-4 and leads the conference at 5-0.
Vassar took a 4-2 lead in the first when junior Gavin van Beveren (Alpharetta, GA) and first-year Payne Lounsbery (Long Beach, CA) blocked a Chris Shanley attack. The Hawks tied 7-7 when Tim Drake hit in a kill, but two New Paltz errors kept the Vassar lead. The set remained close until a 5-1 Hawks run made it 16-17. Two more Hawks' errors and then a kill from junior Adam Gulick (Buffalo, NY) put Vassar up 19-17. The brewers maintained the lead, and van Beveren knocked in a kill to make it 23-21. The Hawks cut the lead to two before Gulick hit the set-winning kill.
In the second, Evan Kane tied 19-19 following a kill. Vassar then took a 21-19 lead following two New Paltz errors. Another Hawks' error made it 22-20, but New Paltz rattled off a 5-0 run to close the set and tie it up 1-1.
Kills from Gulick and Lounsbery gave Vassar a 9-7 advantage in the third. Some back-and-forth points followed as the Hawks tied 10-10. A service error gave the Brewers a one-point lead, but New Paltz answered with the following three points. A 5-0 span by the Hawks made it 13-19. The Brewers battled their way back in, and Gulick made it 19-23 after a kill. A final kill from John Ronan gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead.
After tying 9-9 in the fourth set, New Paltz's Pat Wing hit two-straight kills, and Brendan Spulnick sent in a service ace. The Hawks continued to control and took a 22-15 lead before Gulick knocked in a kill. New Paltz then closed out the match with the final three points.
Gulick led the Brewers with 11 kills, while Lounsbery added eight. Van Beveren recorded six blocks, while Jacob Kim (Pleasanton, CA) had 31 assists.
Shanley had 13 kills for the Hawks, while Spulnick had 11, and Wing tacked on ten kills and nine digs. Kyle Shaffer tallied a match0high 37 assists.
Vassar returns to action on Wed. Mar. 30 to host Elms at 6 p.m. in Kenyon Hall.
