ARLINGTON, VA – Junior Adam Gulick (Buffalo, NY) led the No. 4 Vassar men's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep against Marymount on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers move to 14-4, and the Saints go to 19-5 overall. Vassar won 31-29, 25-21, and 25-23.
Marymount pushed Vassar to 31 points in the first set. The Brewers never led by more than two points, and Gavin van Beveren knocked in a kill to make it 20-18. Marymount responded but kills from van Beveren and Gulick kept the narrow advantage. The Saint's Mason Moore recorded a kill to tie 29-29, but two straight Saints' errors gave Vassar the set victory.
In the second, van Beveren sent in an ace, and then Payne Lounsbery recorded a kill to put Vassar ahead 11-8. Marymount chipped away to make it 12-11 following an Ervin Harrell kill, but the Brewers responded with a 6-1 run to lead 18-12. Vassar continued to build its lead, and Andrew Kim sent in the final two kills to earn set point at 25-21.
The Saints took a 3-7 lead after a Vassar attack error. The Brewers used a 7-2 span capped off with two consecutive Andrew Kim service aces to take the lead at 10-9. Five set ties followed, and at 15-15, the Saints scored three unanswered points to regain the lead. Vassar tied at 22-22 when Jacob Kim, Gavin Akoto, and Andrew Kim blocked a Will Wright attack. Marymount followed up with a kill to take a one-point lead. Two Saints' errors gave the lead back to Vassar, and van Beveren hit the final kill for set point.
Gulick hit .524 with just three errors on 21 attacks. Van Beveren added 11 kills on .500 hitting, while Andrew Kim had ten kills with two aces. Jacob Kim recorded 36 assists, and Lounsbery grabbed seven digs.
Vassar wraps up conference play against New Paltz on Sat. Mar. 26 at 6 p.m. in Kenyon Hall.
