Box Score PURCHASE, NY – Eight different players scored to lead the Vassar College women's lacrosse team to a 20-4 victory over Manhattanville College on Tuesday afternoon. The Brewers move to 2-2 on the young season, while the Valiants are now 0-2 overall.
The Brewers got off to a fast start in the game as junior attack
Kateri Sanseviro scored back-to-back goals in the opening three minutes of the first quarter. Her first goal came at 14:07, converting a pass from classmate and fellow attack
Annie Uyeki, while her second was just over a minute later as senior captain
Ashley Roberts earned the assist for the 2-0 Vassar advantage.
Sanseviro netted the hat-trick at 3:29 of the frame, dropping in a pass from senior defender
Maya Barrett-Tzannes for a 3-0 lead, but the Valiants had the last note of the quarter as Marisa D'Angelo scored with a second remaining in the frame to make it a 3-1 margin after one.
In the second stanza, it continued to be a dominance by Sanseviro as she scored at 12:29 to put the Brewers up by a 4-1 score. Vassar continued to add to its total as rookie midfielder
Kali Ringler buried a shot with 9:24 to play, followed at the 8:55 mark as Sanseviro dropped in a free position tally, following that up 51 seconds later with her sixth of the game and a 7-1 advantage.
Persistent pressure continued to pay off for Vassar, grabbing an 8-1 lead behind another free position tally – this time from Ringler for her second of the game. With 4:56 to play, the Valiants struck back, also on the free position as Caity Bianchi buried one past Brewers goalie
Lauren Johns.
Vassar's defense continued to be strong down the stretch, holding Manhattanville off the scoreboard as the Valiants shots went wide or high over the final two minutes.
In the third quarter, the Brewers continued to press offensively as Ringler sent in a shot in the opening minute that was saved, while junior
Maddy Kretten's shot on the free position at 13:38 went just wide. It would be sophomore attack
Lola Wright to push the margin ahead by seven (9-2), connecting on the free position at 11:58.
Less than 10 seconds later, the Brewers found the back of the net once again. Junior midfielder
Trina Chou won the draw control, driving the ball down the field to send a pass over to Sanseviro who buried her seventh of the contest at 11:49 for the 10-2 advantage.
Minutes later, Ringler rang the bell once again for the Brewers. Her initial shot was saved by Valiants keeper Britney Sirota, but she grabbed the loose ground ball, firing in her third of the contest at the 9:21 mark for the 11-2 lead and the hat-trick.
Manhattanville responded soon after, taking advantage of a Brewers foul to set up on the free position attempt. From eight-yards out, Maura Kelly cut the deficit to eight (11-3) for the Valiants. Vassar though, continued to press as rookie
Reilly Mulcahy dropped in a saved shot, and her second attempt seconds later proved the difference as she buried the Brewers' 12th goal of the game up over the shoulder of Sirota with 7:23 left to play.
Continuing to press, the Brewers made it a 10-goal margin at the 5:36 mark as Wright collected a pass on the fly from Roberts, streaking into the goal mouth for the 13th of the game to implement a running clock. A goal from freshman attack Elizabeth Kenrick boosted the lead to 11 (14-3) and the Brewers saw Mulcahy score to take a 15-3 advantage into the final quarter of play.
Fourth quarter action continued with the running clock but Manhattanville fought to close that gap as Bianchi converted on the free position to make it an 11-goal margin at 13:46. Despite that momentum for the home team, the Brewers once again answered as Sullivan converted with 12:04 to play for a 16-4 score.
Mulcahy fired in two straight for the Brewers and sophomore
Yael Gelman added a pair of goals as well to wrap up the victory for Vassar.
In addition to Sanseviro, who posted nine shots – eight on goal – with two ground balls and four caused turnovers, the Brewers saw Mulcahy post four goals with five ground balls, along with four caused turnovers. Ringler had three tallies, while Wright and Gelman each notched two scores. Rookie
Margaret Norsworthy-Edghill – who assisted on the final two goals of the game – had two helpers, while Roberts also posted two assists.
For the Valiants, Bianchi had two goals, while D'Angelo and Kelly each posted one. Kasey Molito contributed a game-best five caused turnovers, adding three ground balls, while Ally Petricca posted four ground balls for Manhattanville.
In goal, senior starter
Jackie Molloy finished with two saves before giving way to sophomore
Lauren Johns, who stopped two shots as well. Rookie
Bree MacMullen came on for the final 3:45 of the fourth quarter and was not forced to make any stops. For the Valiants, Sirota shouldered the loss with nine stops on the afternoon.
Vassar finished the day with a 41-12 margin in shots, also leading the way in ground balls by a 27-19 edge. The Brewers were also 16-of-23 on the clear and had just 21 turnovers to the Valiants' 31.
