No. 2 Brewers Defeat Raiders 3-0; Coach Gary Earns 100th Win at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The No. 2 Vassar men's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win over the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Tuesday evening in Kenyon Hall. With the win, head coach Richard Gary earns his 100th win at Vassar. The Brewers move to 12-2 overall, while the Raiders slip to 7-5. Vassar won in 25-17, 27-25, and 25-18.

Junior Andrew Kim (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) led the Brewers with 11 kills, while junior Adam Gulick (Buffalo, NY) added nine. Sophomore Colin Jones (San Diego, CA) recorded five blocks, while senior Matt Usui (Rolling Hills Estates, CA) matched a career-high with 18 digs.

Vassar started the first set slowly, falling behind the Raiders 2-6. The Brewers slowly chipped away and then used a 5-0 run with four straight kills to tie 10-10. MSOE built up a 12-14 lead to force a Vassar timeout. Junior Gavin van Beveren (Alpharetta, GA) tied the set on an ace. The Raiders went up 15-17, Vassar scored ten straight points to close out the set.

The second set was close, and Gulick sent in a kill to tie 20-20. After a Gulick ace and then a double block by Payne Lounsbery (San Diego, CA), Jones made it 23-21. The Raiders ran to take a 23-24 advantage before Kim tied it up. A Vassar error gave the Raiders the lead, but the Brewers went on a 3-0 span to go up two sets.

MSOE used three unanswered points to tie 10-10. Sophomore Jacob Kim (Pleasanton, CA) snuck in a kill after a wild rally, and then a Lounsbery ace made it 13-10. The set remained close, but another strong Brewers' finish capped off with an Andrew Kim kill completed the sweep.

Jacob Kim led the Brewers with 30 assists, while Lounsbery added four service aces.

Austyn Bella recorded seven kills for the Raiders, while Jacob Sirny had four aces and three blocks.

Vassar hits the road next when they travel to St. John Fisher on Fri. Mar. 4 for a 7 p.m. match.
