Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Brewers Take Down Raptors in Three Sets

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Vassar men's volleyball team won its second straight UVC match with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-12) sweep of Bard on Tuesday evening.

The Brewers used a strong scoring attack against the Raptors as two different players registered ten kills. Sophomores Vaughn Ramsey (Denver, CO) and Andrew Guaragno (Holmdel, NJ) both totaled ten kills, while senior Joe Hendrickson (Feeding Hills, MA) added five.

Vassar took the first set after trailing 0-1. The Brewers took an 8-5 lead following a Guaragno kill. Bard fought back to make it 8-7, but Vassar got into their swings to take the following five points. The Raptors fought hard, but Jacob Kim (Pleasanton, CA) knocked in a kill, and then Andrew Halberg connected for an ace to make it 20-11. The Brewers continued to roll and took the final two points to secure the set.

The second set was a closer affair, but the Brewers still won 25-23. Bard took a 6-4 lead until a Raptors' service error and then a block from Guaragno, Hendrickson, and Kim tied the set. The Raptors would use a 4-0 run to take a two-point lead, and then another 3-0 span made it 17-14 in Bard's favor. After some more back-and-forth, Vassar closed out 6-3 to go up 2-0.

When Hendrickson knocked in the kill, Vassar easily won the third set and went up 8-3. A 6-0 span pushed the Vassar advantage to 15-5, and the Raptors could never make it close again.

Ramsey finished the day hitting .769 percent and added three blocks, six digs, and one ace. Guaragno also had four blocks and an ace, while Hendrickson finished with four blocks and two aces. First-year Gavin Akoto (Justice, IL) tacked three kills, two aces, four blocks, and two digs. Kim led the team with 28 assists.

Ty McGlynn tallied a game-high 16 kills for the Raptors, while Angel Obergh added five.

The Brewers are back home on Fri. Feb. 18 to play Elmira at 6 p.m.
