Brewers Cruise to 3-0 Sweep Over Soaring Eagles

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The No. 2 Vassar men's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory over Elmira in UVC play on Friday evening. The Brewers won 25-12, 25-22, and 25-17 for their fourth consecutive sweep to move to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference. Elmira now goes to 10-6 and 0-1 in the conference.

In the first set, Vassar took an early 5-1 lead after Gavin van Beveren and Adam Gulick sent in a pair of kills. After Elmira cut it to 6-3, a service error and then kills by Andrew Kim and Gulick made it 9-3. A 5-1 Brewers' run gave Vassar an eight-point advantage. The Brewers continued to roll and took the final two set points following blocks by Jacob Kim and Joe Hendrickson and then Andrew Kim and Hendrickson.

Elmira kept the second set competitive and took a 2-0 lead before Vassar rattled off a 4-1 run to retake the lead. Elmira went on to go up 5-4, but two Soaring Eagles errors and then a Gulick kill made it 7-5. Elmira kept the set close with teams going back-and-forth on scoring until a Brewers' service error made it 15-14. Andrew Kim then sent in two straight kills and an Elmira error made it 18-14. The Soaring Eagles cut the lead to 24-22 before Andrew Kim recorded the set-winning kill.

Vassar went ahead 8-5 and always remained in control of the third set. Elmira chipped away at the lead, making it 13-11. Andrew Kim knocked in another kill and then a triple block by Andrew Kim, Jacob Kim, and van Beveren pushed Vassar ahead by four. Elmira made it 25-17, but a final Soaring Eagles' error gave the Brewers the victory.

Gulick led the Brewers with 16 kills, whole Andrew Kim and Payne Lounsbery added nine each. Jacob Kim blocked five shots and van Beveren tallied four. Jacob Kim also had a match-high 35 assists, while Andrew Kim led the team with eight digs.

Alberto Mauricio led the team with eight kills, while Neiram Galan-Canales had 12 assists.

Vassar is back tomorrow for a tri-match against Stevens and Ramapo starting at 1 p.m.
