CAMBRIDGE, MA – The No. 2 Vassar men's volleyball team swept MIT 3-0 on Saturday afternoon to open UVC play. The Brewers now move to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. MIT falls to 6-3 and 0-1 in the UVC. Vassar won in 25-18, 25-13, and 25-22.
The Brewers quickly went ahead 4-1 in the first set behind a kill and ace from junior Gavin van Beveren (Alpharetta, GA). Despite that, the Engineers responded with a 5-1 run to take a one-point lead. An MIT error led to three-straight Andrew Kim (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) kills to push the Brewers ahead 9-6. The teams traded points until Kim and van Beveren went back-to-back on kills to make it 14-9. MIT chipped back to cut the lead to 15-13, but a Payne Lounsbery (Long Beach, CA) kill and an ace by Adam Gulick (Buffalo, NY) gave Vassar an 18-13 advantage. The Engineers managed to stay close, but three-straight points to close out gave Vassar the set.
In the second set, the Brewers capitalized on some Engineers' errors to take a 13-4 lead. Vassar continued to run away, leading by 12 points after Kim and Gulick knocked in kills, and Jacob Kim (Pleasanton, CA) sent in an ace. MIT attempted a comeback, but the lead was too much, as Andrew Kim knocked in the set-winning kill.
The third set was closer with six ties until it stood 13-13. MIT kills Bradley Albright, and Grant Oh gave the Engineers a 15-13 lead, but Andrew Kim and Gulick responded with a kill apiece to tie again. The set stayed within one point until MIT took a 20-18 lead following a Brewers' error. A bad set gave Vassar the next point, and a block by van Beveren and Jacob Kim tied 20-20. The Brewers scored the next three to retake the lead. Andrew Kim scored the final two kills to complete the sweep.
Andrew Kim finished the day with a season-high 17 kills on a .727 hitting percentage. He also had two aces. Gulick went for seven kills, while van Beveren added five with five total blocks. Jacob Kim made 30 assists, while Lounsbery led the team with six digs.
