Stevens Nets OT Winner to Defeat Marywood

Rookie Emily Smart scores game-tying and OT game-winner for the Ducks

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Rookie Emily Smart scored the game-tying goal with seconds left, later netting the game-winning tally in overtime to lift Stevens Institute of Technology past Marywood University in the second game of the 32nd Annual Betty Richey Tournament at Weinberg Turf. The Ducks are now 1-0 to open their 2021 campaign, while the Pacers slip to 0-2 on the season.

Marywood junior forward Angie Genter, who opened the game's scoring at 1:38 with a solo tally through a scramble in front, eventually made it a 2-1 lead for the Pacers at 37:54. Rookie forward Miliana Straub earned the assist on the second goal for Marywood, corralling her own save shot off the rebound for a quick cross through the goal mouth. Genter waited at the far corner, burying a shot in for the 2-1 advantage.

Stevens amped up the pressure at the end of the third quarter, but it was the fourth quarter that saw the Ducks dominate. Following a number of shots that went just wide or were stopped by sophomore keeper Rachel Yohn, Stevens broke through with just 20 seconds to play in the game as fifth-year forward Brynn Froehlich dribbled into the circle on the near side, shuffling right as she sent a shot to the right corner of the goal. Smart corralled the ball to her left, then doubled back on the right to bury the shot into the left corner and practically seal the overtime bid.

In the overtime session, both teams had their chances. Genter nearly capitalized but a quick pass from Straub was just too far up for her to catch up to. Stevens then came down the field as junior forward Natalie Logan collected a pass at the midfield, dribbling up into the zone. She sent a quick pass to Smart in the circle who went in on goal with Logan on a 2-on-1 with the keeper. A pass back to Logan, saw her get tangled with the goalie as the ball came loose for Smart who buried it into the box.

Stevens owned a 16-12 edge in shots for the contest and an 8-4 margin in corners. In goal, senior Emily Franco recorded seven saves for the Ducks, while Yohn made three stops on the afternoon.

The Ducks will face Vassar on Sunday in the deciding game of the Betty Richey Tournament. Game time is set for 1pm. Marywood is in action on Tuesday, hosting Elmira at 4pm.
