POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar field hockey offense heated up on Saturday afternoon, scoring seven second-half goals in the 8-0 victory over William Paterson. Seven different Brewers scored, with Vassar now moving to 6-1 overall. The Pioneers slip to 3-2 with the loss.
Despite the score, the game was only 1-0 at halftime. Vassar scored early in the first quarter. Sophomore Maggie Werner (Berkely, CA) inserted the penalty corner to Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA) at the top of the circle. Brigger shot, and Werner repositioned herself on the left side of the Pioneers' net. Werner took the high shot and tipped it in for the opening score at 5:09.
The game remained scoreless as the Brewers' defense did not allow a single Pioneers' shot the entire game. Vassar had a few more chances in the second quarter, taking three shots on goal. Goalkeeper Emily Hoagland stopped each attempt to keep it a one-score game at the half.
The Brewers took 18 shots with eight penalty corners in the second half. Senior Carina D'souza (Mountain Top, PA) netted the following two Vassar goals in nearly identical fashion. Both came after D'souza inserted the ball from the left side to the player at the top of the arc. D'souza then redirected the ball off the shot attempt and into the net. Ella Pearl (San Francisco, CA) assisted on the first, and Brigger assisted on the second.
Vassar kept building its lead when Sophie McGrath (Yarmouth, ME) crossed the ball to Molly Zahnleuter (Clifton Park, NY) on the left side just outside the circle. Zahnleuter drove and fired the ball through the defense for her first-career goal.
Brigger scored two minutes later at 40:07 to make it 5-0. She broke through the William Paterson defense and chipped the shot from the upper right of the circle. Pearl netted the next goal off a routine corner play. The ball was inserted to the top of the circle, and Pearl launched the ball into the middle net.
At 55:46, Leilani Llamas (Grapevine, TX) scored her first-career goal, taking the ball off a Katie Hieb (Pewaukee, WI) penalty insertion. Llamas rocketed the shot from the top of the circle to make it 7-0. The final Brewers' goal came at 59:25 when first-year Gianna Trunfrio (Clinton, NY) powered her way through the William Patterson defense. She drove through the right side and wound up the shot. The ball went through the defenders' legs, and the goalkeeper could not make the save.
