Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 16 Brewers Outlast Roadrunners

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar field hockey played one of the most evenly matched games of the season today but came out ahead 2-0 over Ramapo. The Brewers scored early off a Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA) penalty stroke goal in the fourth quarter from Leilani Llamas (Grapevine, TX). With the win, Vassar earns its second consecutive shutout to move to 7-1 overall. Meanwhile, Ramapo falls to 6-2.

Early on, both defenses locked down until the Brewers drew a foul in the Roadrunners' zone for a penalty stroke attempt at 5:39. Brigger lined up for the shot and fired into the bottom left of the net to give Vassar a 1-0 lead. The Brewers had more chances in the second quarter but could not connect for many accurate shots. Ramapo tried to respond late when Maggie Farrell's shot was turned away by goalie Sarah Dumaresq with under a minute left in the half. A Roadrunners' penalty corner followed, and this time defender Sophie McGrath (Yarmouth, ME) stopped the shot for the defensive save.

The action was light in the third quarter, with Vassar only outshooting Ramapo 2-1. Then in the fourth, the Brewers drew two penalty corners and found net off the second one. Jaclyn Narleski (Basking Ridge, NJ) inserted the corner to Llamas to the top of the circle. Llamas one-timed the shot through the Ramapo defense to secure the 2-0 win.

Dumaresq made two saves in the win, while Ramapo's Michelle Kukan had four. Vassar held an 8-7 shot advantage and a 9-6 corner advantage as a team.

Vassar begins Liberty League play next by hosting RPI on Sun. Sept. 26 at 1 p.m.
