No. 18 Vassar Falls in Double Overtime to No. 10 Kean

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The No. 18 Brewers saw their winning streak come to an end in a tough 0-1 double-overtime loss to No. 10 Kean on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Vassar slips to 4-1, while the Cougars move to 4-0.

Both offenses had plenty of chances to score despite the score, with 39 total shots being taken, but the defenses set the tone early. After five minutes of mainly midfield play, Kean's Peyton Mann fired a shot on goal through the Vassar defense. The ball slid past goalkeeper Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA), but sophomore Heidi Compton (Clark, NJ) snuck in behind for the defensive stop.

Soon after, junior Avery Bauman (Westbrook, CT) rattled off three shots on the Kean goal, but Jenna Flemings made three straight saves. A late first-quarter penalty corner gave the Cougars a few more chances to score. Dumaresq held strong in goal, though, making two saves, and then Compton tacked another defensive save to keep it 0-0.

Momentum slowed down in the second quarter with only three shots being taken. Then the Cougars limited the Brewers to two shots in the third. Another Kean corner allowed the Cougars to take two more shots, but Dumaresq tacked another save, and senior Sophie McGrath (Yarmouth, ME) picked up a defensive stop.

The Brewers had chances in the fourth, but shots were tied 5-5. A final breakaway shot from Gianna Trunfio (Clinton, NY) sailed right as time expired as the game went to overtime.

The Kean offense fired off six shots in overtime, but the Vassar defense dug in by making two stops. With time winding down in the second overtime, a shootout looked likely. The Cougars lined up for a penalty corner with 40 seconds remaining, and the ball found its way to Megan Keeney, who shot at the Vassar goal. Mann then redirected the shot into the top left corner to take the win.

The Vassar defensive picked up four defensive saves, with Compton having two and McGrath and Sarah Ryan (Swampscott, MA) each having one. Dumaresq had a career day in goal, making a season-best 11 saves. The Cougars tallied one defensive stop, and Flemings made seven saves.

The Brewers continue their homestand on Wed. Sept. 15 against Montclair State at 7 p.m.
