POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Montclair State brought a storm to Vassar, but the Brewers persevered through two lightning delays to come out with the 3-2 victory on Wednesday evening. With the win, Vassar moves to 5-1, while Montclair State drops 2-2.
Vassar got on the board early after Ella Pearl (San Francisco, CA) passed quickly to Gianna Trunfio (Clinton, NY) five yards out in front of the Red Hawks' net. Trunfio chipped the quick shot through the defense to make it 1-0 at 9:56.
The Brewers struck again at the 5:14. Maggie Werner (Berkeley, CA) inserted the penalty corner. The ball found its way to Jaclyn Narleski (Basking Ridge, NJ), and then she dished off to Werner for the second goal of the night.
Another delay at 10:44 in the second quarter slowed down the Vassar momentum, with Montclair State cutting it to a one-score game at 7:07. Charlie van Tassel netted the goal from a Gab Maisto assist. Vassar answered about a minute later when Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA) fired the ball straight in goal from a penalty insertion from Narleski.
The Red Hawks responded by building the offensive pressure early in the third quarter. Montclair State rattled off five-straight shots on goal within the first five minutes, but goalkeeper Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) made saves on all of them. Despite Dumaresq's solid defense, a Vassar foul gave Montclair a penalty stroke attempt at 10:20. Lindsey Bicher chipped the shot past the goalie and made it 3-2.
With time winding down in the fourth, the Red Hawks took two penalty corners in the final minute. The offense managed three shots but could not strike the goal as Vassar hung on for the win.
Both teams played evenly, with Montclair State holding a slight 12-11 shot advantage, but the Red Hawks were ahead in corners 9-6. In goal, Dumaresq finished with six saves, and Montclair's Lauren Pickul had four.
Vassar is back home on Sat. Sept. 18 to host William Patterson at 1 p.m. on Weinberg Field.
