Records Fall Despite Tough Loss for Women's Basketball

Brewers set program game record for 3pt FG's made and attempted in 69-61 loss to Springfield

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, MA – It was another record-setting day for the Vassar College women's basketball team, which posted 14 three-point field goals made on 43 attempts, in a tough 69-61 loss at Springfield College on Saturday afternoon. The Pride move to 6-0 on the season, while the Brewers fall to 0-4 overall.

The Brewers mark of 14 three-pointers made surpasses the previous record of 13 – a mark hit three times, most recently in December of 2010. Vassar also eclipsed the program record for three-point field goal attempts in a contest with 43. It surpassed the team's previous mark of 41, set in the 2021-22 season opener at Smith College on November 13. Additionally, senior captain Dani Douglas recorded six three-pointers which was two short of tying the all-time mark of eight – set most recently in 2019 by Isa Peczuh '20.

The homestanding Pride opened the game on an 11-0 run before the Brewers battled back, paced by back-to-back layups from senior captain Sarah Gillooly and a three-pointer from senior captain Dani Douglas to close the gap to 11-9 with 4:12 left in the opening quarter. A pair of free throws from junior captain Eliza Srinivasan tied the contest at 11-all at the 3:09 mark, but Springfield saw Riley Robinson bank a pair of free throws, while Rachel Vinton drained a jumper as the home team headed into the second quarter with a 17-11 advantage.

Springfield opened up a double-digit (12 point) lead to open the second quarter, but a three-pointer from junior Ashley Hansen turned it into a 23-16 margin with 6:55 to play. A three from Srinivasan less than two minutes later closed the gap further to four (26-22), but a layup from Grace Dzindolet sent the Pride into the halftime up 31-25.

In the third quarter and down by eight, a shot from beyond the arc by Douglas helped make it a 33-28 game at 7:33. The Pride opened the margin back to a double-figure lead, but another three – this time from rookie Julia Harvey – brought the deficit to nine (46-37) with 1:25 to go. A pair of free throws from Gillooly and three-pointers from Harvey and Douglas sent Vassar into the fourth quarter facing a 51-45 deficit.

Fourth quarter action saw the Brewers continue to fight as Gillooly helped close the gap to seven (53-46) at the 6:23 mark. Springfield's Sam Hourihan countered with a layup less than a minute later and added a pair of free throw makes to open the lead to 11 (57-46) with 4:55 left in the contest. A pair of buckets later saw Springfield holding a 61-46 edge, which was cut down on Srinivasan's three (61-49) with 3:44 left to play.

Inside the final two minutes of play, Douglas threw down back-to-back three's and a Gillooly jumper made it a seven-point score (65-58) with 54 seconds to play. The Brewers fought hard over the final seconds, adding a Gillooly free throw and a pair of makes at the line by Srinivasan, but Vassar was unable to hold off Springfield.

Leading Springfield was Hourihan – who led all players in the game – with 20 points. She completed the double-double with 13 rebounds, adding four assists and a block. Dzindolet added 15 points and eight boards with four assists and two steals, while Sidney Wentland recorded 11 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double with five assists and a game-best four blocks.

Vassar was paced by Douglas's 18 points as she went 6-of-19 from the floor and 6-of-15 from three-point range. She added eight rebounds and two steals. Srinivasan, who was a perfect 4-of-4 from the line, added 13 points with four boards, an assist and a steal, while Gillooly had 12 points, six boards, a game-best four steals and game-high eight assists. Rounding out the double-figure efforts for the Brewers was Harvey, who had 10 points, three boards and two assists.

Vassar returns to the court on Tuesday for their final game before the Thanksgiving break. The Brewers head to New York City for a 6pm showdown against New York University.
