POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – A William Smith goal with 11 seconds left in the second overtime downed the Vassar field hockey team 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Weinberg Field. The Brewers move to 11-4 overall and 4-3 in the Liberty League with the loss. Vassar now earns the two seed in the conference tournament. William Smith goes to 6-9 and 2-5 in the conference.
William Smith got on the board first, scoring off their only shot attempt in the opening quarter. Sofia Pattillo made a quick pass left to Emily Leonard inside the circle. Leonard then chipped the shot past the Vassar goalkeeper to take the 1-0 lead at 14:35. After the score, offenses slowed down with shots tied 3-3 in the first half.
The Brewers evened the game at 39:06 when Maggie Werner (Berkeley, CA) shot from the left wing into a tight Herons' defense. There Avery Bauman (Westbrook, CT) dove and forced the ball into the goal. Vassar continued to keep the pressure on William Smith afterward and took seven shots in the fourth. At 7:31, Werner inserted a corner to Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA), who struck the goalie on the shot. Senior Sophie McGrath (Yarmouth, ME) collected the rebound and nearly snuck the ball in but hit the left post instead.
In the final five minutes of regulation, the Herons picked up three straight penalty corners. Heidi Compton (Clark, NJ) picked up the defensive save on the first shot by Libby Maxwell. Then, goalkeeper Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) tallied saves on the next two corner shots.
William Smith came out strong in overtime and drew a penalty stroke at 6:24. Kate Barilla lined up the shot, but Dumaresq stopped the ball to keep it 1-1. The Brewers could not get out of their zone and had few opportunities to score. The Herons went on to take two corners in the final 27 seconds of the second overtime and scored with 11 seconds left. Lea Mateo Medina shot from the insertion, and Maxwell redirected the ball into the net.
While Liberty League play is wrapped up, Vassar continues with two more non-conference games before the tournament. The Brewers next travel to face Scranton on Wed. Oct. 27 for a 7 p.m. contest.
