Vassar Drops Non-Conference Match to Scranton

SCRANTON, PA – A lone goal from Scranton late in the third quarter proved to be all that was needed to down Vassar 1-0 on Wednesday evening. As a whole, the game was a defensive battle, with only nine total shots taken between both sides. The Brewers now move to 11-5 overall, while the Royals rise to 15-1.

Neither team took a single shot attempt in the first quarter as the backlines prevented any offenses from developing. Then in the second, Scranton drew two consecutive corners but was unable to get a shot off. Vassar responded with two of its own, with first-year Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA) having a shot blocked. Brigger proved to be the Brewers' main option, who fired the ball on the frame at 22:13 before the Scranton goalkeeper made the stop.

The Royals scored with under a minute remaining in the third. Katie Redding found the loose ball in front of the Vassar net and slipped it past the goalie for her 13th goal of the season. Vassar's best chance came in the fourth after an early penalty corner. Brigger fired the ball from the top of the circle, but goalkeeper Clare Maguire pounced on it before the Brewers could collect the rebound attempt. That was the last shot of the night as Scranton held on for the win.

Vassar wraps up the regular season on Sat. Oct. 30 when they travel to face New Paltz at 1 p.m.
