Vassar Athletics Announces Fall 2020 Plans

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – After careful consideration and in consultation with state and county health experts, Vassar College has made the decision that Vassar athletic teams will not participate in intercollegiate competition through December 31st, 2020. Additionally, the Liberty League has announced it is canceling conference competition and championships for the same time period.  A decision was announced by the league's Presidents Council this afternoon (LINK).

"This was a difficult decision, and I want to say that I understand how deeply disappointing this is for our student-athletes, coaches, and staff who have worked so hard to prepare for the upcoming fall semester," said Director of Athletics and Physical Education Michelle Walsh. "Yet, as we looked at the resurgence of COVID-19 in the United States in recent weeks and the protective steps required for intercollegiate competition, it became clear that though difficult, this decision was the right one in order to safeguard the health and wellbeing of our student-athletes, staff, and the entire college community."

Despite the decision to step back from intercollegiate competition, Vassar understands and supports the integral role that athletics plays in the education of its students.   As such, coaches and staff are working to develop ways for student-athletes to safely participate in training and development activities this fall, including in-person practices and instruction, strength and conditioning training, student-athlete development programming, and leadership training.

Additionally, plans for all students to access the fitness center, enroll in Life Fitness classes, and participate in other organized and open recreational activities continue to be in development.  All plans will be made accordance with all New York State guidelines and campus protocols.

Lastly, the decision to participate in intercollegiate athletic competitions after January 1st, 2021 will be made at an appropriate time, and will be informed by an evaluation of the state of the COVID-19 pandemic. The College will continue to confer with the NCAA, and the Liberty League regarding subsequent decisions.
