POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The No. 6 Vassar men's volleyball team picked up a pair of wins on Wednesday evening. The Brewers first defeated Trine 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-22) and then downed UVC opponent Bard 3-0 (25-6, 25-13, 25-14) in Kenyon Hall. Vassar now moves to 14-5 overall and 5-1 in the UVC. Trine drops to 3-11, while Bard falls to 1-14 and 0-4 in the UVC.
The Brewers dominated the Thunder, outhitting Trine .358 percent to -.073 percent. Andrew Kim (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) recorded nine kills on 11 attacks (.818 percent) with no errors, while Kevin Ros (Bridgewater, NJ) added eight kills. Gavin van Beveren hit well too at .778 percent with seven kills. Ros and Jake Kaplan (Leesburg, VA) also tacked on two service aces each.
The Brewers controlled every set, but Trine kept it 7-7 in the first. Kim spurred a 3-0 run after a kill, and Vassar maintained the lead down the stretch. A kill from van Beveren made it 19-15, and then a van Beveren, Ros, and Kaplan block pushed the lead to five before closing the set.
After Trine scored the opening point in the second, Vassar rattled off six straight. Another 3-0 Brewers' run after a Thunder score pushed the lead to 9-2, and Vassar kept pulling away. The Brewers closed the set on a Kim and van Beveren block assist.
The Thunder went on to take a 9-8 lead in the third, but Kim tied it up with a termination. Trine fought back to take a 15-13 advantage, but after Vassar tied it 18-18, went on a 6-0 run. Van Beveren knocked in the match-winner off a Steven Koja (Temecula, CA) assist.
Against Bard, Kaplan led the way with nine kills, six service aces, and two block assists. Four Brewers in Andrew Halberg (Newark, DE), Matt Usui (Rolling Hills Estate, CA), Joe Hendrickson (Feeding Hill, MA), and van Beveren each had four kills, while Jordan Klembczyk (Penfield, NY) dished out a career-high 24 assists.
Vassar controlled all the action, hitting .440 percent as a team while holding Bard to -.162. The Brewers used a 9-0 run in the first to go up 22-5 and cruised for the victory. In the second Kaplan used two service aces to make it 21-10, and then Klembczyk snuck a kill in to make it a 12-point contest. Van Beveren once again knocked in the final kill. In the third, three-straight kills by Usui made it 16-5, and then a 3-0 span pushed the Vassar advantage to ten. The Brewers closed the set out on a 3-0 win.
Vassar hits the road next, traveling to Elmira on Fri. Mar. 6 at 7 p.m.
