ITHACA, N.Y. – The Vassar women's tennis team did not slack after receiving a first-round bye in the Liberty League Championships. A 3-0 sweep against William Smith starting the day, as the Brewers continued for the 6-0 victory in the semifinals.
"In doubles, it was our best day this season in terms of great play and setting our partners up for put-away volleys at every position. We had very few unforced errors," said head coach
Kathy Campbell. "Our court position for volleys was superior and much improved. 1 doubles had their best spring season match together. At 2 doubles we beat a team we lost to previously. Third doubles was on serve throughout and both teams played high level, attacking tennis. The 8-7 tiebreak win at 3 doubles providing extra momentum and confidence moving into singles."Â
Starting at the first court,
Frances Cornwall and
Tara Edwards continued their winning ways, defeating Maggie Bonomo and Dina Rigas 8-2.
Sarra Yekta and
Melina Stavropoulos matched their score and picked up the second court win over Kate Foley and Allie Perron. Things got interesting at the No. 3 when
Morgane Flournoy and
Ashley Fair were down against Charlotte Engebrecht and Katelyn Nguyen. Vassar completed the rally, edging the Herons 8-7 down the stretch.
Vassar did not drop a single set in singles play. No. 1 Cornwall won 6-0, 6-1 over William Smith's Allie Perron. Tarar Edwards had a strong performance at the third singles, winning 6-2, 6-1. No. 5
Meghan Rodick tallied the clean sweep versus Leland Barclay at 6-0, 6-0 in both sets.
""It's always harder to play a team a second time. We really stepped it up by executing an even more commanding style of play. I'm so pleased with our composure, fight and execution. This team just keeps getting better every week."
Due to league rules, the match ended with the completion of the match at No. 3 singles. Vassar's Yekta, Stavropoulos and Flournoy were all leading their matches before they concluded.
Vassar now faces top-seeded Skidmore in the championship match at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
